KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER:
DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

Petrucha/Von Eeden
Moonstone

I have to admit that I've never seen a KOLCHAK episode. Sure, I know that the show was an inspiration for Chris Carter's THE X-FILES, but that's about it. Therefore, I had no preconceived notions about this book. That said, I quite enjoyed DEVIL IN THE DETAILS.

Reporter Carl Kolchak has a knack for investigating the unexplained, much to the chagrin of his boss Tony Vincenzo. This time around, he's digging for details about the mysterious case of Chester Fredersen, cofounder of a California high-tech firm. It seems that Fredersen has literally disappeared - body part by body part.

Writer Stefan Petrucha has spun a genuinely creepy yarn, engaging to the end. Despite a silly subplot about a toy robot, Petrucha's script is tight and his dialogue is on the money. Kolchak's first person narration is especially enlightening.

Artist Trevor Von Eeden's work is appropriate for this book, although I've seen stronger efforts from him (like DC's SLEEPER). Still, his rough linework suits Kolchak and his freaky world. Unfortunately, Von Eeden's attempt to create mood is thwarted by the too-bright coloring.

Fans of THE X-FILES will undoubtedly enjoy this book. I don't know if Petrucha's Kolchak depiction jibes with the TV version, but I'd wager it is, considering his attention to characterization in his previous THE X-FILES comic work.
