GRELL SUMMER SPECIAL

Pell/Zumel/Trebor
Bughouse Comics (bughousecomics.com)

Ya gotta give writer Jason Pell props for defying the super-hero genre. Sure, there've been a few Western comics over the past few years, and even a few that have thrown in a bit of mysticism to the mix, but Pell and company craft a comic with a unique flavor.

Grell, an enigmatic hunter of evil, seeks out a beast that's been killing local townsfolk. His trail leads him to Lerringer Manor, the key to the mystery.

We don't know much about Grell initially, but Pell has constructed a compelling character. This issue serves as a good introduction to the mysterious avenger, yet whets our appetite - who is Grell, exactly, and what motivates his quest?

The artwork, by Federico Zumel and Trebor, is quite sharp. It's shown off to great advantage in stark black-and-white, and although it's occasionally difficult to tell characters apart, Zumel clearly has a future ahead of him.

Unfortunately, the strong script and slick art are marred by poor production values - the lettering is especially horrible. Still, GRELL is an impressive debut, and well worth seeking out.
