THE
PERHAPANAUTS: A DOSSIER
Todd Dezago/Craig Rousseau
It's kinda cool when two comic pros get
together and crank out a homemade comic. That's what Dezago and
Rousseau have done here, and it's a lot of fun.
The Perhapanauts are a group of adventurers
who work for BEDLAM (the Bureau of Extra-Dimensional Liabilities
and Management, don'tcha know). Their diverse members include Big,
the resident Sasquatch, and Choopie, a - what else? - Chupacabra.
In this introductory ashcan, we're given
two short stories. The first, "Seven Months Earlier,"
features team members Arisa, a psychic, and Molly, soon to become
a ghost. It's still in penciled format, but the art's reproduced
quite well. The second tale, fully inked, is "Fiepick"
- a vignette focusing on Choopie's need to be useful to his teammates.
Rousseau's art is crisp and clean, and there's
been an intriguing evolution of style since his IMPULSE and BATMAN
BEYOND days. When he inks his work, it evokes Mike Mignola and Michael
Avon Oeming, but remains distinctly Rousseau.
"Fiepick" works better within
the context of this preview - you don't have to know much about
the characters, and Dezago quickly telegraphs what we need to understand.
"Seven Months Earlier" starts in media res, but it tantalizes
the reader - we want to know more!
That's the biggest problem with THE PERHAPANAUTS:
A DOSSIER - you want there to be more. There are some interesting
"Who's Who"-style entries on the team and some dynamic
pin-ups, but my appetite is whetted for more adventures. The inside
back cover promises more tales "coming soon," but offers
no date.
Still, it's a unique feeling to get in on
the ground floor of an intriguing concept, and I have no doubt The
Perhapanauts gang is destined for big things.
THE PERHAPANAUTS: A DOSSIER is available
for $5.00 (plus $1.00 shipping) from: The Perhapanauts, 52 Calendar
House Rd., Elizaville, NY 12523.
