It never ends: Al Simmons grave has been
desecrated, his body exhumed. Al's former wife Wanda and her husband,
Al's best friend Terry talk to police about the confusing situation,
just the latest in their lives since Al has died. Meanwhile across
town a young witch named Nyx experiences visions, Detectives Sam
and Twitch are once again drawn into the web left by Al Simmons
and a man walks through the park, hungry, alone and with no memory
of who he is or where he came from. Just that he's free.
Events however quickly escalate as Nyx
finds the man wandering alone in the park. He is the one in her
visions and what she needs to do to help him, may just destroy the
man he is. The United States Government wants to know why Al Simmons
body is missing and they call upon the one man who may know, Jason
Wynn, held without trial all these years. Under the guidance of
a demonic presence from the past he begins to claw his way back
into power.
Such are the events of Salvation Road,
the current arc in Spawn by the creative team of Todd McFarlane,
Brian Holguin and Angel Medina. Even though it has been two or three
years since I've picked up an issue of Spawn, reading the middle
issues of this arc was liked I hadn't missed a beat. This is the
prefect time to jump onto Spawn if you haven't read it in a while.
It's nice to se that Todd still has a hand
in his creation. For better or worse, depending on whom you ask,
Todd still finds the time to steer his baby in the direction he
wants. Brian Holguin is right there with him to craft the tales.
While not being very familiar with his other past work, Brian writes
a very good story. Easy to read and easy to follow. He's building
on over one hundred issues of past history with out making it too
bogged down in explanations and narrative.
However, if there's one thing that the
Spawn comics are noted for it's the artwork and Angel Medina fills
those shoes quite well. His style is an amazing fit to what McFarlane
and Capullo brought to the drawing table before him and he had a
lot of practice working on the KISS book Psycho Circus title for
most of its run. What grabs my eye is the attention to detail, whether
its his ability to fill the pages with crawling insects or a garbage
filled alley, there's always plenty to look at.
The entire Salvation Road story arc should
be out now on your local comic book stores shelves. Check 'em out.
