SUBATOMIC
Patrick Neighly/Jorge Heufemann
Mad Yak Press

The first thing that struck me about SUBATOMIC is that it’s COOL. The cover is striking, with an added shiny embossing effect. And the smaller-than-a-comic, but not-quite-digest-small size just oozes with coolness.

SUBATOMIC tells the tale of Mark, a member of a super-secret spy organization, ATOM. Although he has the rather dreary job of reading peoples’ mail (to see what you dissidents are up to, you know), he finds himself philosophically opposed to the groups’ clandestine approach. But once he escapes, he’ll have to avoid pursuing agents for the rest of his life.

Writer Neighly does a fantastic job of not only propelling the reader into a gripping story, but also raising thought-provoking issues. Neighly uses words economically, knowing when to let the art speak for itself.

And speak it does. Artist Heufemann captures Mark’s exploits from a Kansas farm to the big city to the depths of ATOM headquarters. His work reminds me of Sean Philips – and that’s always a good thing. Colorist Anne Marie Horne complements Heufemann’s linework with appropriate simplicity.

I can’t recommend SUBATOMIC enough. It’s a hiply packaged, tightly paced thriller that’s as thought provoking as it is entertaining.
