THE QUEST FOR ABEZEN,
BOOK ONE: "TO THE DEATH"
Marc N'Guessan/Christophe Gibelin
iBooks/Komikwerks (www.komikwerks.com)

This striking graphic novel is indeed a "Book One." That is, it's obviously part of a much larger story that will undoubtedly take some time to develop. Still, "TO THE DEATH" is a fascinating thread of a broader tapestry.

Hotis, a member of a bearlike race, is the security chief for a mining operation. During an excavation, the miners discover a cache of eggs, perhaps from their old enemy, the insectoid Krekerses. Meanwhile, a group of multi-racial adventurers begins a quest to save the world.

ABERZEN is a large, treasury-sized graphic novel - which is appropriate considering how much is packed within. Writer/artist N'Guessan takes full advantage of the large pages, cramming them full of story and detail.

Colorist Gibelin is an integral part of the mix. I'm sure he works with a computer, but his work looks as if it was painted.

THE QUEST FOR ABERZEN is a promising start to a series deserving of an American audience.
