ELLIUM BOOK 1
Jason Moser
Genome Studios (www.genomestudios.com)

ELLIUM is the tale of Angelica Cain, a young woman discovering that she's soon to play a decisive part in a classic battle of good vs. evil - a battle she never even knew existed.

Sure, that's not the most original concept - but what is, these days? Writer/artist Moser has fun telling a solid tale that's obviously a labor of love.

Once past the striking cover, you'll find an extremely well put-together book here. ELLIUM's production values are top-notch, especially for a black-and-white book. The black ink is as black as the souls of the bad guys, and the art reproduces crisp and clear. (No one doubting the quality of Dream Weaver Press need worry.)

Moser tells the story directly and clearly, though he could have used an editor (if for no other reason than to help weed out typos). It doesn't take long to get to know Angelica Cain, and Moser uses the tried-and-true method of letting us in on the secret world of ELLIUM at the same time Angelica discovers more.

The art is quite distinctive. It took me a little while to get used to it - it looks like a combination of computer-manipulated photos, drawings, and maybe even some computer-assisted drawing. It suits the story well, though, and Moser achieves a signature look for each member of his large cast.

ELLIUM is bound to appeal to fans of Witchblade, Buffy, or anyone else who likes a bit of magic with their action babes. And at $9.95 for a nicely designed 136-page graphic novel, it's a great value.
