Another %@*# zombie book?!
Oh, wait, this one's different.
Four seemingly mismatched friends, lovable smartass criminal types, take things in stride when half the people around them are turning into zombies. After all, they have a delivery to make. Mouse, Kuji, Tag and Yeti are bearing a mysterious stolen package cross country and they're not going to let cops, zombie lesbians or a charming psycho with his pregnant zombie lover chained in the basement stop them. All the while they are unaware of the cryptic and mystically empowered.....but otherwise very pleasant....man observing them from a distance.
THE GOOD - This is NOT another generic zombie book. This is more like a clever, sarcastic piece of crime fiction heavy on the humor with zombies added to the mix. Pell's snappy patter between his quartet of crooks, whether it's discussion of why radio static is the "sound of space" or one of the many times Yeti is given a hard time, is almost always on target. Characterization is quickly and efficiently set without it being shoved down the reader's throat. Our four primary leads are easily established as "the brain," "the smooth, quiet cool guy," "the easy-going, smart-mouthed cool guy" and "the grumpy screw-up."
Viacava's art is a good match for the material, loose and open enough with good mastery of facial expressions to carry the comedy in Pell's script while still detailed enough to execute the action and monsters well.
THE BAD - As with many indy and small press books I found the lettering to be wanting. While not an issue for some readers for others, like myself, sub-par lettering can be an annoying distraction from the material.
The inking, while perfectly utilitarian the majority of the time takes a lot of the depth and flow...a lot of the "life"... out of Viacava's pencils.
THE UGLY TRUTH - Zombies are hot right now, you can't turn around without seeing a new zombie book. But if you're like me, it's already starting get a little old. HOWEVER, like I said up top, this one is different. Zombie Highway is witty, clever and fun. This first story arc/miniseries, "The World Accordingly," gives you enough to enjoy it on it's own, but also leaves enough unanswered that you want more.
