The Line Issue#3

Hey, this is the cover to Issue 3 of The Line. I haven't posted on here in a while though so let me know if I commited any kind of in-netiquette. Since this wasn't exactly sequential art, I wasn't sure which forum to put it in. I put it in this one though because it's larger than 500 pixels across and I might add some sequentials to this thread as well.

For now though, let me know what you all think of this cover. C+C is completely welcome and encouraged.

These would look good straight to colors. Kinda like in the Conan book. And you might want to fix the girl cops boobs; it looks like the shirt is tucked right under them, you want to make it look more like a uniform, not spandex but that's just me.

Great work on the image and composition. Very solid.

The female cop and her uniform (Wayne Drakes comments), I'm 50/50 about. If you want to add more realism, untuck her shirt and make it more realistic, BUT personally I like the tiny bit of 'sexiness' added to her otherwise normal uniform and you can draw a pretty good looking woman too.

Again, great artwork.

Ooh... and post more often you lazy bastard.

This look freakin sweet! The layout is amazing.

As far as the female cops boobs go, I agree that they are a little too pronounced. It reminds me of what a stripper dressed as a cop might look like. Frank Cho does a great job of drawing boobs under clothes. Check out what he does if you want to change it.

Wow! I remember earlier art for this title and this new stuff is very impressive. Your figure work has grown tremendously. Everyone has such natural poise/movement. Nice variety of expressions and you transmit each characters emotion and personality well.

I worry a little that the compostion (which is dynamic) might be a little busy for a cover. Might be tough getting the logo in there too. Plus, on some racks if the logo's not on top it disappears. Also, this is just my preference, but I'd like to see that burning building turned slightly so more of it's right face shows. Right now it seems a little flat.

Minor crits...it's a very strong piece. Can't wait to see the interiors!

Eric, you've done a great job in choosing content for the upper portion of the page. All are very representative of the seedier side of any cityscape. My question would be their application to the story of these two cops. They look like rookies, very young, and don't look like they would encounter some of these rougher scenarios in their current roles. I'd see these types of things apply more to a detective story or crime drama like NYPD Blue. Now I've seen the cover for #2 that you had posted on Deviant Art, and it's pretty simple and to the point. Can you give us an idea of the characters and the story? It just seems to me, judging from the covers I've seen, that the story may be two steps ahead of the probability of these characters experiencing these scenarios. That's the first impression I get.

Now, I don't know what the first issue cover looked like, but the second cover looks like it offered ample space on top for both the company and title logos without covering up important aspects of the image or imagery. In this current case, I find the image works well as a pin-up or promotional piece, which stands on it's own and doesn't require the standard placement of logos (which should be on top if you consider how they will appear on the rack). I don't find this image works as a cover because of what will be hidden in the process. To give you a different idea of how this cover can be designed to avoid this problem, have the crime images at the bottom of the page framed by a silhouetted cityscape (even add the building in flames as part of this silhouette) and have your main character as she is now, looking down and sullen with her face in shadows as she walks throught the sludge of crime, reinforcing the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. This way the logos can remain at the top and the balance of the page (and the symbolism) are left intact. Your components, but moved around.

Something(s) to think about.

Reeeally great work ... only thing, if this is a cover, theres no room for the logo!!! Unless you go all crazy and put it in the bottom ...

Cool cover. I agree about the female cops breasts.

Also, its great to see Woody Allen get the beat down he deserves.

SOOO who is inkin this bad boy!?

Like the title says....how is going to be honored to ink this bad boy! I WOULD LOVE to ink this up if you have need of an inker for it! Great piece, love the body composition. I agree with the breasts but if you fix the shadow underneath them you will be fine. Great job and let me know if you need an inker for it
