The I didn't make the top 10 Blade Contest thread...

I thought I'd start a thread for those of you who did the Blade contest and didn't make the top ten. I'm not sure if my entry made it on time, but no matter here is my entry. These four pieces took me less then 10 hours to do. I started them one night and then the next morning worked on them. I have never worked so fast in my life.

On another note: does anyone like this simple type of style. I would like to know if this style is marketable with a little work. I love to be able to finish four pages in one day.

For those of you who did make it, congratulations. Here is the link to the top ten.

Blade contest top ten

Here is the entry that I did, which is not in the top ten.

Joshm

Those other submissions looked good. . . but you shoulda been in there somewhere. . . you are definitely more reader-friendly than some of the top ten. . .

Maybe it would have helped if you has a uncle or something on the judging panel

Thanks sneed. The contest was for $500 and going to San Diego con and since I'm going anyway I don't care. But the $500 would have been nice. Thanks for the your input, sneed.

Joshm: Sorry you didn't get through mate. You've used some good camera angles and the storytelling is quite nice. But you have some anatomy issues and the pages loook more like layout sketches than finished peices. It isnt a crime to use a ruler or french curve on your linework. It needs some tweaking and refining. Just keep drawing Look forward to you posting more.

Steveo: Out of all the entries, I think Khoipham was by far the best. His storytelling and relating the woman to the room was really well done. Great camera angles. His rendering wasn't as well defined as his spawn/batman pages. ut I voted for him too. The guys work is awesome. But I thought some of his panels in this sequence were poor compared to other stuff he has posted.

This reminds me of the comics I used to read in the comics section of the Sunday paper! Good job.

This looks rushed and unfinished to me.

I personally (just being truthful) wouldn't vote for this. You may be able to get four pages done in a day, but the standard just isn't that great - anatomy issues and very boring inking will not help you attract readers.

PLUS, I would say that many professional creators could produce 4 pages of equal or higher quality in a day too.

On the positive side: You have some very good storytelling, it reads fairly well and you have chosen some nice panel compositions, but Blade is a licensed character - they'll expect alot more 'finish' to the work.

Your style could suit a more character/story focused indie book, but not IMO something so mainstream.

Not trying to be a prick - just giving you MY honest opinions.

jimmybott: Thanks for the comments. I'm sure with some more refinement of this style it might fly. I wouldn't normally draw this way, but it was a Sunday and I wanted to do something different that day.

nickleboy: Thanks for letting me know you liked it. I wanted to see if this type of work was marketable. In comics it might not look all that great, but it does tell the story, nevertheless.

sevans: Thanks for being honest. I agree that many pros may have done it better. Thanks for the comments. Not that I don't agree with you, but could you point out the anatomy issues. I can see some, but I'm sure I'm missing some important ones. Thank.

j giar: Thanks for commenting. You're right, I can do better. I wasn't thinking I would get in the top ten anyway, but I only found out about the contest two days before it ended and I wanted to give it a shot. I didn't have much time on Saturday to do it, so I ended up doing all but two panels on Sunday. Next time I enter one of these things I'll give myself more time.

Josh

Another brave soil. Glad to see you posted. I had fun doing this too, so I'm not worried about it. For the most part yours was understood, but you should have put the girl looking over at Blade running by. Otherwise, I think you did well.
