A Rhino In Acrylics

Hey folks, been a while, here's a black and white painting of a rhino in traditional acrylic paint. Critiques welcome, thanks.

Digging the variety of stuff posted, especially the grey tonal studies. It would be nice if some of that finds its way in to your b&w line work pieces.

Cheers

Thanks for dropping by Youngatart .

Yeah I aim to do more painting over linework in 2018, I've been doing a lot of linework in 2017 to level-up my construction skills.

Here's another line sketch - a baby turtle:

It seems you have a very disciplined style constructing figures. I have tried several ways from just drawing from my head, using reference, using 3d figures but rarely constructing the basic frame/skeleton. Here you start with the shape of the figure which is where I start also. The shape is important because you can establish an attitude before drawing a face or establishing lighting. I like to draw the shape in black because sometimes carving out the highlights rather than spotting blacks gives a different look. Your process is impressive.

Thanks fella, this was an experiment and I don't think I would approach figurative stuff this way now - I would construct first using lines and then paint big shapes then small shapes. However, while construction from first principles is good, I think the biggest improvements come from doing studies from life or photo reference.

Keep at it dude, I'm loving your stuff .
