Fundamentals
Hey guys and gals,
I've been getting pretty serious about my cartooning lately, and with that realised I need to improve a great deal with my fundamentals before trying things I'm not qualified to pull off. So I've been doing some anatomy work on the two hardest areas, feet and hands. Just a small selection at the moment, but perhaps I can keep adding here. The first couple were sketches I took some time over - the second lot are sketches I roughed out in a few minutes - I was advised it's good to learn by sketching quickly and making mistakes to learn from. So here they are. All photos taken on my phone, so sorry about the background! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for taking the time!

I love seeing life studies and figure drawing. I try and do as much as I can.
You can try working some gestures into your practice and enviroment studies. Love doing and seeing them too

wow! your feet are really good! (most people hate feet)
your first hand is off in proportions... thumb should join about half way on the palm .. and finger length should be approx the length of the palm. keep at it and you'll be rocking |

drewerd: Thanks! It's something I hated doing before, but when I sketch out something that turns out good, I feel proud of myself for even starting it. I'd like to continue and really hope to start turning out more and more throughout this thread. I need to move on to the female shape, as I understand that's quite a hard one to get right!
random: Thanks for the kind words! My feet are just ordinary feet like anyone else's, but yeah, they are pretty great... I don't find the feet too hard to draw once I break them down into triangular shapes, to be honest. I think it's seeing them as a whole that makes them daunting. I'm not going to say I think it's easy, because it isn't, but they aren't as hard as hands, that's for sure! I'll keep adding to this thread over time, I might just have gotten lucky with my first few feet sketches! ![]() OZ!: Thanks! It's the way I learnt back when I started - and I've never forgotten it. Although I haven't been doing much life drawing over the last 10 years (throwing it aside for cartoons instead) I've realised I have to learn it to get better. One of the first things I learnt was breaking objects into shapes, and it really is a great way to draw! Magnus: Another one from The Shire! See you down The Prancing Pony!
