Spaceship Yamato/Star Blazers live action film

TOKYO -- The new live-action Space Battleship Yamato has cruised to the top of the box office, sinking Harry Potter down to the No. 2 spot with a take of almost 1 billion yen ($12 million) in the first five days since its Dec. 1 release.

Opening on 440 screens, distributor Toho reports that Yamato had pulled 791,012 cinema-goers into its wake by Sun 5. Nearly two-thirds of audiences are reported to be in their 30s and 40s.

The big screen version of the classic 1974 anime stars Takuya Kimura and has already been sold to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, France and Germany, with negotiations in progress for a U.S. release.

I hope the US gets the deal for it to play here! What a blast from the past

The trailers look kinda cool and I love that they used the original theme music from the show!

"Orientals"? How antiquated an expression

Seriously though, you obviously don't know much about the "physics" of anime. All those large eyed characters? They're Japanese. Just because the eyes are round and large doesn't mean the characters are meant to be western. In fact, they often portray westerners with narrower eyes.

You'd be surprised how often I've heard the term used overseas, even in America.

Yes, those round eyes and perfect American English really do indicate how Japanese they are

That's a very lifelike, but strangely oversized and oddly placed, figurehead on the space battleship.

Frank....you've surpassed yourself. Take a bow.

You probably also thought that Japanese people in modern downtown Tokyo ride rickshaws and wearing straw hats talking with accented English.

Old American cartoons. Gotta love how they can't visually tell the difference between Japan and China.

Japan is a city in China. Everyone knows that.

Or is it the other way around?

I loved this show as a kid. It seemed like the wave motion gun (if I recall the name correctly) was damaged every other show, but they always got it fixed just in time. Ha-ha.
