New Adobe Photoshop functionality = Never trust a photo again

I came across this and am totally amazed at what this new feature will do for PS users when it is released. It makes it substantially easier for people to "cheat" with their pictures...

Holy Crap! How do they do that?

This also led me to look up photo manipulation and how prolific it is. Surprisingly, it has been around for a VERY long time...

Photoshop is becoming scary. I forsee the whole 'owning Photoshop makes me an artist' thing getting out of control.

Content Aware is an amazing tool and will no doubt be very handy when designers are up against it on deadline day or whatever, but for some reason I get the feeling it'll be the new Lens Flare, in that the serious users will steer clear.

GIMP has a similar plugin called resynthesizor, in cas you don't want to shell out the rediculous money Adobe wants for yet another iteration of PS. I actually use both PS and GIMP, and sometimes I even prefer GIMP depending on what I'm doing. I have CS3 and don't plan on spending more money on a new PS any time soon. It is a pretty cool feature though.

In regards to "never trust a photo again" (which I realize was almost certainly somewhat tongue-in-cheek), this is a pretty amazing feature, but it's nothing you couldn't have done by hand before; it just took a lot longer.

That is kind of my point. You could certainly do these things before, but it took a lot of work to make it look right. Some people could never pull it off competently. This new feature makes things like this MUCH easier. I think it is an awesome feature, and will be put to good use by ad agencies and tabloids everywhere. My mind is boggled by the code/algorithms they must have come up with to pull this off...

After being trained in Photoshop and using it for years I decided to try GIMP rather than upgrade, and I hated it. It lacks the polish and some of the innovation that the Adobe suite has. My productivity went way down, and I had a hard time adjusting to it. It is great to have a free alternative available, but I will remain a PS user for now. I hate paying the premium for it, but it is worth it for me.

I've never used (or until today, even heard of) GIMP. Frankly, I was scared of googling it, but now I've looked at the site and wiki entry, I'm wondering if I should use it (Only have PS Elements, so no CMYK support).

Have you tried GIMPshop? Takes less acclimating as it's GIMP with the PS type setup. I understand what you meant about lacking polish, but it does do most of the stuff you would need. Anyway, I'm not suggesting you switch programs, far from it. But if anyone is considering getting CS5 just for this feature and the other changes (most of which are assuredly small tweaks) I'm presenting a free alternative. Resythesizor is one of the things I use GIMP for. PS is my go to coloring program though.

Well, you're not going to get CMYK out of GIMP either, unless there's a plugin I'm not aware of. Still, you should check it out. It's worth a look. It's pretty easy to use and there are a lot of tools, brushes, plugins ect.. out there for free. I still use CS3 for most things, but GIMP is a close second as far as photo manip/coloring goes.

Some of those examples of photomanipulation are just awful.

Even a photoshop rookie like me can do a better job than that...

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to apply for a job at Time magazine...

I'm not going to claim that it takes a lot of talent to do some of the photo-manipulation and retouching at the level someone like myself can do it, but it does take some skill at least. The examples I've seen of GIMP and now Photoshop's new automated tools like this aren't all that great, but they do a better job than a bad Photoshopper. I'm half excited to make my twiddling that much easier, and half dismayed. (Who am I kidding about excitement? I'm still using Photoshop 6)
It's like when I explain how much work goes into digital coloring and people are like: "Oh, I thought the computer just did that for you."

... it's getting to that point.
::sigh::

I could have done a better job with the skin tone, but something about that and the contrast between the resolutions makes it extra creepy.

But this is real, right?

I did photo manipulation for years for private parties making sportswear for family members, or for the purposes of removing other people from photos for things like obits. I once built a doggie out of 5 partial photos of said doggie. That was all the friend had, partial shots. Even the owner of the doggie was fooled.
There is already a small inexpensive program that does what PS is going to do. There are actually 2, but one is much better at it. PS doing it even better...kinda looks like it. That being said, I can tell you that the demo photo's which were shown here were carefully picked for optimum results. Time saver? You bet, but an answer to all photo buggers? Nah... apps like these do help in the saving of time and boredom of picking away to do the flawless job.
