Warmageddon : the work journal

I've always followed Chris Stevens's work journal and like the idea, so I'm stealing it for Warmageddon.

Warmageddon is a series of short stories which means I'm always working on something or another. My goal is to drop in here at least once a week with an update, so that everyone can see what's going on in the land of Warmageddon. I'll try to be as transparent as possible without getting to specific.

That's the goal, so I'll begin with my next post.

As I posted in my Warmageddon Projects thread over in my forum, I've finished coloring panel one of the next Thomas strip.

Thomas is a monthly strip that is posted on the first of every month to www.warmageddon.com. It's the continuing adventures of the little boy (and his family) that was introduced in DWP #17. The strip is drawn by Roeddy Rillf with everything else down by me. It's my homage to Calvin and Hobbes, Dennis the Menace and Copper.

I try to finish my work on the strip before receiving the next one. The tentative due date for the art is the 23rd of the month. I'm not a real stickler for Warmageddon deadlines, but it's important to have the next strip in hand before the current strip goes online.

This has been a relatively busy week for Warmageddon with several projects either finishing and/or turning in new art.

I just posted Thomas, so I'll take a look through my email to see what else has come in this week.

Tyler Richlen (OZ) turned in 4 new strips (21-24) for the Eirian and Orumil (E&O) weekly strip. E&O has been on a but of a hiatus as I waited for new strip. However, strip 16 should post soon and I have strips 17-20 completed. I enjoy working on all Warmageddon stories, but I especially enjoy inking Tyler's pencils.

I often stop whatever I'm working on to ink a panel from a new strip from Tyler. Above you see the first panel from strip #21. Before I ink a strip, I have to prepare the borders and letter it, so having to ink that one panel usually costs me about 1 hour worth of time in prep work alone.

Which reminds me that I promised to set up an FTP account for Tyler....

A new find of mine via the 50 Girls 50 contest was Patrick Inglebert. I was able to get his contact information via DeviartArt and he agreed to do a short Warmageddon story featuring Tiegre. The Tiegre story was written by Kyle Steele. I initially contacted Pat back in October and he started work in December and I have all six pages of the story complete and prepped for lettering. I hope to have that story finished and packaged with my new Warmageddon books that I will be selling at cons this year.

Dominic Vivona sent me over yet another page for the new ongoing Tiegre adventure strip. This is what I like to call the fantasy version of the classic sci-fi strips like Flash Gordan. I've been wanting to do a strip like this for a while and Dominic was finally able to commit to it.

This strip takes place in what we call current time in Warmageddon with Tiegre off exploring the continent to the east. It's a concept that I've been thinking about for a while and decided to give Tiegre a new costume for her travels to the east. So any time there is a story with Tiegre in here old costume, it's back story. Moving forward Tiegre is in the costume above with was designed by DW's own Tielman Cheaney.

As soon as I finish this post, I have to prepare a contract for Matthew Weldon (Phillup). I've been eying Matthew's work for years and we've been just missing each other on projects. I finally managed to get him to work on the a pin-up for the Warmageddon Tarot. He'll be doing an image of the new Tiegre as the Strength card. I can't wait to see what he brings to the table.

If I get the contract ready before tomorrow, then I can send it out in the mail at the same time as the order for 20 copies of Warmageddon Illustrated #1 that I received a couple days ago.

This is pretty much the typical week for me and I didn't mention that I contacted Mike Imboden to write an ongoing Izzy and Gunnar strip for www.warmagddon.com. I already have an artist on board for that, but I'll talk about that later when it's closer to fruition. The plan is to have 3 weekly strips running on Warmageddon.com in addition to the monthly Thomas strip and the regular short stories.

That Troll Pic (heck, all the pin-ups) look very slick and polished. Kudos to you and everyone involved with all the work.

The focus for this year is getting the 3 weekly strips running at Warmageddon.com. They will be updated with E&O on Mondays, Tiegre on Wednesday and Izzy and Gunnar on Fridays.

Thomas will continue to run monthly.

There will be at least 2 new story collections this year.

I received "sketches" for the next 2 Thomas strips from Roeddy. I say "sketches" because they always appear to be finished pencils to me. I almost hate sending corrections because they are always so clean. The panels above are 2 panels that will be appearing in the future strips unchanged. The other panels need some work. Once the final strip has gone online, I'll post the various steps. including the original "sketches."

Since I'm not working my day job today, I'm getting some Warmageddon stuff done today.

I added a new page to the web site that allows you to see all the Thomas strips on one page (http://www.warmageddon.com/thomas.asp). On the first of the month and until a new blog or strip posts, warmageddon.com would redirect to the Thomas page and show the newest strips at the very top. Ultimately, a new front page will be added to the site over time that will showcase all the newest strips and the most recent blog posts.

For the rest of today, I'll be:
inking and graying the next Eirian & Orumil strip
coloring the next Thomas strip
lettering and graying the next Tiegre strip

Man, I'm loving that Tiegre pinup!
(or is it a panel?)

I've become unhealthily addicted to the DWPFF work journal...thanks for adding something else I'll have to check out (more than) daily! This is my first exposure to all these characters, but each one seems to have a really clean, distinct art style on its side. My interest is more than piqued...

The first was a Tiegre sketch that Pat worked on to get a feel for the character.
The second (Tiegre coming out of the water) is a panel from the new Tiegre ongoing strip by Dominic Vivona

There are more Warmageddon stories at www.warmageddon.com

Willia Blankenship, our own 3!ll, has been working on a sotry featuring Mik'L of Jobus. Mik'L is Wrmageddon's Conan the Barbarian and he is quite smitten with Tiegre. This story is one of many to come featuring Mik'L. This one was written by Mike Exner III.

3!ll works primarily digitally, so here are the "pencils" and inks for a panel that he sent over today. Not seen here, but will be added by me in post production, Mik'L has a full arm tattoo on his right arm.

Editing

My largest job with Warmageddon is editing and lettering.
I letter mainly so that I can edit scripts to fit the art as most stories are written full script and the writer never sees the art.

HOWEVER, with the new Tiegre strip, I plot. Dominic draws and Mike scripts AFTER seeing the art. We're still early in the process and only have 3 strips under our belts. Below is one of my favorite editing jobs thus far.

On the right is the script that Mike sent over AFTER seeing the art. On the left is the edited version that will run.

I think all writers should at least dabble in lettering so they have a good idea about how much text can fit in the panel.

Mike is usually wordy and knows that I will edit his text down as needed, so it's a good working relationship and maybe the cut material will make it's way into a director's cut somewhere
