Fans Boycott Left 4 Dead 2

UK, June 8, 2009 - Fans of 2008 first-person smash Left 4 Dead have reacted strongly to last week's news of a sequel, calling for a boycott to the new game in response to Valve's perceived lack of commitment to the original game.

At the time of writing some 15,000 fans have registered their disdain on a Steam Community Group, (thanks, videogaming24/7) asking that 'Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.'

The news of a sequel for Left 4 Dead goes against Valve's typical practice, wherein titles are often in gestation for long periods and given extensive post-release support.

Valve's VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi reacted to the news in an interview late last week, telling RockPaperShotgun, 'There's more content coming for Left 4 Dead in the fairly near term, that I think will sort of add to this picture and hopefully change some people's opinions of what's happening right now.'

Left 4 Dead was one of 2008's highlights, earning a 9.2 when reviewed back in November. The sequel relocates the action to the Deep South, as well as adding frying pans and chainsaws into the mix - which all sounds like an awful lot of fun.

Isn't it a full new game with a whole set of new characters and everything?

I believe so, but I guess it isn't enough to warrant a purchase.

I don't know about the "free update" (buncha feckin' cheap bastards). But I can see the expansion thing.

I love how they support like dozens of games post-release, but *one* game they announce a sequel for less than a year later and it's "Off with their heads!"

Their issue is that it's little more than an expansion for a full game price. If it were DLC there wouldn't be any of this.

I love Left 4 Dead. I love Valve. I'm probably still going to buy this game, but I can see why others are pissed. Valve always supports their games for years and years before releasing sequels/installments. I guess fans have just been spoiled forever and were expecting multiple updates/DLC (which is still coming). I just want my TF2 update ASAP.

Wohoooo! Valve are facing a tank of their own.

Left 4 Dead has very little content to warrant a £40 price tag, especially so if you play with a friend offline. They said they'd be releasing new levels/maps. The only update so far has been that Survival crap, and those two campaigns for Versus Mode (Death Toll, Dead Air), which should have came with the game anyway.

They've recently announced that they will be releasing new content (probably the last), but there is still no mention of new levels/maps.

Left 4 Dead was a rip off. Left 4 Dead 2 is an even bigger rip off.

I played the demo, and surmised it was a game that I probably wouldn't want to play through more than once.

My issue with the game is only this: it's only a four hour experience. If I'm gonna lay down $60 on a game, you have to provide AT LEAST 8-10 hours of solid gaming. Left 4 Dead is a solid game, don't get me wrong. But it's length does not justify it's purchase price. Now, if it was $30 or $40, I'd think differently.

Luckily, I can get my co-op zombie butchering on with friends on Nazi Zombies in CoD: World At War.

Yeah, that's a little shady. I mean, I expected the full TF2 treatment with L4D. TF2 STILL has new content in the works, and it was available in the Orange Box, along with several other titles, for a low price. That being the case, and the sublime gameplay in mind, no one really cared that TF2 was pretty barebones when it first came out.

I've had some great times with L4D, but it's still not as replay worthy as TF2.

~Sigh~ TF2, why do you tease me so?

Left 4 Dead is a great game for what it is. It's a quick campaign, but the repeat playthroughs are a lot of fun because of the unique spawm system - it's never the same game playthrough. Survival mode is okay, though I was hoping they'd introduce more weapons to go with it. I'm certain Valve will continue to support L4D anyways, so I'm not as upset about a L4D2 coming out.

True, it is never the same when you play through, BUT it's also only a 4 hour experience every time you play and there's nothing else to it. Sounds like a heavy cost to pay when you throw down 50 bones. Hopefully the campaign for L4D 2 will be AT LEAST 8 hours in length. That'll be worth my money.

I'm with you on the short campaign for Left 4 Dead. For me though, it was all about the cooperative play between four friends throughout the maps. Playing solo is a bit of a bore compared to playing through multiple times with friends. I do think they'll take what they've learned from this release and make for a larger campaign for part 2.

I hate games that are TOO co-op/multiplayer intensive (except for "party games"). I was pissed when I bought Battlefield 2...
