I read that Depp arrived at the announcement dressed in a pirate costume - glad to see he is a purveyor of The Method.

Seriously though - this could be no bad thing. Hopefully they'll jettison Bloom, Knightley and all that other guff and chronicle a new adventure for Sparrow - which is what they should have done with 2 and 3.

If they had any sense then they would drop the POTC nomenclature entirely and come up with a new title.

PoTC 1-3 was more about Bloom and Knightley than Depp. He was just a vehicle to get them from point A to point B.

If they do a 4, then focusing on a Sparrow tale would be be a departure from the previous 3 especially since Knightley is a mom and Bloom can't come ashore but once every 10 years.

I could see the early adventures of Sparrow that were hinted at in the first three being interesting. Maybe something like 1001 Nights were the end of one story leads into another.

However Jack ended 3 searching for the Fountain of Youth (because he wants immortality after all) so it would make since for Bloom to be in future tales as well since he is Immortal and (more or less) part of the sea. I expect we have not seen the last of Bloom or Knightley even.

Was I the only one not impressed by the 2nd and 3rd films? I mean the first one was great, in my eyes, but the last two left a lot to be desired...maybe its just me though

the first one had something the last 2 didn't really have, what was it.. what do you call it? oh yeah

FUN!!!! dammit fun! those last 2 were dark and just tried to get too much out of a story set around a frickin ride! the only fun parts were Depp as Sparrow, i couldnt give a rats ass about bloom and kinightly, they should be supposrting characters.

my girlfriend is gonna cut my balls off now for insulting bloom. bugger

No, you're right.

But admittedly, I think 2 and 3 were better than they could have been because they DID cut back on Sparrow's character (IOW, if they focused on him more, I think it would have dragged 2 and 3 down even further).

2-3 just seemed like the writer's needed something to compete with the first one.

Writers: We need a movie about pirates...what could pirates do? Fight ninjas? Fight pirates? Fight mummies? Fight...zombies? ZOMBIES!!

couple years later

Writers: We need something that's like zombies but not so people will say those are cool FX. So, who do they fight? Mummies, ninjas, or...sea monsters?

Writers: Ok, people didn't like the sea monster idea...maybe we could add more bad guys...mummies maybe. I bet we could get asian people to be in it, so...ninjas? OH and bring in JACK SPARROWS DAD!! People will love that.

Couple years later...

Writers: Ok people hated the Davy Jones story, so we need something with more substance, so, how bout real, asian, zomibie mummy, monster-ninjas?
