Problems with my mustek scanner

I'm about ready to go postal. I just got a brand new scanner lastweek and it doesn't scan. Each time I scan I get an error report. I have windows xp and downloaded the right software to make the 2 compatible. In fact before thatI did some scans and it worked fine. I've been trying for the last 3 hours to get it to work but so far have only got 2 scans completed.

I had another mustek A3 scanner about a year ago and I had the same problems but at least that one gave me a good year before it got all moody. I still think that one is good but I lost the installation cds.
Does anyone else have problems with musteks?

dumb question, but is it USB or parallell port connected?
