A better way to install fonts (windows)

Why hasn't this come before?

Yes it does. But a lot of us were wise enough not to "upgrade".

Can't you just open your fonts directory and Alt drag fonts in there?

That's how you do it on a mac. Super simple and I don't have to copy and paste or get extra software. Seems like when I used a PC all I did was drag fonts into the Fonts folder. Been awhile though.

On the computers at work we have the Adobe Type Manager. If that's as good as it gets on a PC then score another point for Macs.

Digital-CAPS has disabled reputation
I just drop and drag... one copy to the windows font folder (if I intend to install it at that time) and one for the trusty Digital-CAPS Categorized Font folder on the hard drive for storage and back-up. I don't push any buttons or use any software for it. A simple, free mouse function.

I prefer this method...should be standard (as it now is in Vista). The drag and drop method has actualyl given me heartache before, so this is overdue (by about 10 years).

Uh, Extensis Suitcase and other font managers are a much better tool for this because you can keep your fonts in another location, turn them on and off as you please (they get linked into the font folder), and you can preview a bunch of fonts side by side with sample copy of your choosing.

If you don't copy all of your fonts into the Windows or Mac font folder, your system will run much faster because all those fonts don't have to be processed all the time.

Extensis comes for both Mac and Windows, btw.

There's also Font Agent Pro, which is available on both the Mac and PC, I use it on my Mac and haven't had a problem yet. A dedicated font management app, like this, makes life much easier.

I have never been able to run Extensis without my system crashing within a week. Too bad as I'd love to be able to use it.

Hmm, I've never had that happen. Have you tried the latest version, and when was the last time you reinstalled Windows from scratch?

Not sure. Last attempt was 6 months ago. Ditto on the scratch install.
