Drawin' Tunes/Flicks??

Always wondered what kinda tunes/movies other artists listen to/watch when they're chained to the drawing board, so I figured I'd ask.

Me? I really get into the zone in a big way listening to Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Sevendust, Audioslave and Rage. If I have to have the TV on, it's usually the news or something on the Discovery channel, but I have been known to kick it to some House DVDs...

I can't be near a TV and accomplish anything; it's too distracting. As far as music, I like to listen to stuff that matches the mood or tempo of what I'm trying to draw.

I think we did this already? But what the heck!

For one, i tend to forget to put anything on. I need to rectify this, but a lot of times a couple hours will pass and i'll think, "I should have put a CD on!"

I haven't been getting into any newer music lately so i just spin the old cds/ mp3s etc... my music taste ranges from techno to death metal to the outlaws (hank jr, waylon, etc. about the only country i can stand).... but when i work i usually like stuff that gets in my head like Kyuss, Tom Waits, Portishead, stuff that has heavy groove or lets my head wander.... and then the old standby:

METALLICA!

ha!

Anyway... as far as movies, either i'm working on the computer that i would use the play the movie, or i'm definitely not facing it, soooooo.... if i were to watch a movie (sometimes do), its gotta be something with heavy/snappy dialog... something i like listening to.... so that would be your Tarantino flicks, basically. ha!

Here's hoping Rick Rubin can save what's left of the guys' careers!!

I listen to musical scores. I have all kinds of them, from Blade Runner to Edward Scissorhands to Underworld. The music kind of puts me in the mood, depending on what I'm doing, and there are no lyrics to distract me.

When I really need to focus, I like to listen to music where the lyrics are in a different language. Like, Japanese pop music, or anything by Origa.

Dude if you watch the S&M video, I'm all over it (thats Symphony and Metallica, you pervs!). I was in the front row wearing a Kill Em All shirt... there's a part right after For Whom the Bell Tolls where this guy holds up his metallica license plate, and they pull back... i make a nice silly "metal" face. Pretty embarrassing, I don't even know why I'm talking about it.

Anyway, I actually show up a lot in that vid, and I totally enjoyed the show. It was the best show to have front row seats for, because it was in small auditorium (I think it was technically Berkeley High School's auditorium) and there was nothing between me and the stage. Jason HANDED me (not threw) a pick.

They hit a major down turn after that. When they came out with I Dissapear, and Lars went on and on about how great it was to be able to focus all their energy in to writing one song..... and then i heard the song... well... you know.

As far as St. ANger. With all their money/talent/etc, that album was not underproduced. They wanted it to sound like that. Thats the problem. Bob Rock clearly turned into a yes-man and doesn't care what kind of crap he puts his name on. I watched that "Some Kind of MOnster" movie and its all triumphant at the end... but then its not because the album is garbage. They didn't even finish it. The songs go nowhere, there's no solos (why have Kirk Hammet if he's not gonna solo?) It's the kinda "make you look bad before its polished" kinda crap bands don't want to get out (um, by suing napster)...

Rick Rubin has some credibility. I hear he becomes less involved after he does a few albums with a band, but he wont put his name on stuff he doesn't think is up to snuff (ie- that last Slayer album). So, i think he might whip them into shape, who knows?

Crap. I'm sorry to bring this out here on this forum. I was a very passionate fan in my younger days and this spurred some feelings in me..

mattchee:

funny you should mention that b/c i was actually the guy in bed on the "ONE" video. No, really.

But I totally agree with you on the Bob Rock point. I'm pretty sure after all those years of "working" with James and the gang, he was glad to show up and get a fuckin' paycheck.

I watched that some kind of monster vid too and it just seemed more of an excuse for James to complain and bitch about being a recovering alcoholic...and I'm thinking...WTF? this is the guy i tried to emulate in highschool? and lars is just a whiny little bastard anymore. don't get me wrong, metallica's my first love and will always be, but thanks to these guys, music downloading is the way it is and the whole world thinks we're a buncha thieves if we're caught downloading something.

But as far as i'm concerned, Master of Puppets is by far their peak and best album, yet, ONE is by far their best song. I always liked the addition of Jason and thought it only helped the band when he became the bassist, given his insane passion for all things Met....so I was pretty upset when everyone got an attitude and ejected him from the band. I don't know who the guy is they have now and don't care, i think he blows what with all the squatting down and trying to look cool playing with a buncha dudes four times his creative caliber and age. But I don't run the show, i just pirate their music.

I hear this next album (spring 08) is a revisit to old territories like Master and I'm pretty stoked about that. My MP3 player hadn't had a new Met CD in it since I was forced to retire the black album thanks to the hole I burnt into it somewhere between tracks 9 and 10. I skipped buying the others and just made copies from friends and ended up making the transition to Rage, Sevendust, Audioslave and Clutch while waiting for them boys to get there shyte in order.

Here's to the next album, i guess...and hoping there's no repeating past mistakes.

Weren't we trying to avoid this? Oh well.

You make a lot of good points, I just would like to point out that Rob Trujillo (the squatting bassist) does have 100% old school thrash metal cred. He wss in Suicidal Tendencies who've toured and gigged with Metallica since back in the day. He later played with Ozzy (and was replaced on tour by... Jason Newsted!)

I don't blame Jason for leaving. He was like Mr. Metallica 110% as far as his attitude and devotion went, but only getting 2 writing credits in 15 years? He wrote ALL the songs for Flotsam and Jetsam when he was with them. I hear he wrote TONS of songs that Het/Ulrich vetoed. Then they turn around and chastise him because some of his basement recordings hit the radio? Its BS. More power to Jason.

Funny I heard that about St. Anger. In fact I read reviews by people who supposedly heard it in advance ("Lars brought a disc over.. yadda..") and said that, and that it was the best stuff ever... I'll believe it when I hear it.

Music influences me, a lot. Sometimes when I'm uninspired, I'll grab my iPod and pick a playlist and draw what comes out. Heck those of you that have followed my threads have probably seen my raw sketches where lyrics are sprawled all over the pic.
