Speaking about DeviantArt

Hi guys, I was following the threads about myspace and comicspace, where I am already a user, and was thinking in startin an account on Deviantart.
So could you talk about your experiencies on there?

what are the advantages and dissadvantages of deviantart?
what can I do with that site to increase my working possibilities as illustrator/comic artist?

thanks

there's a very large user base, but i stopped using it a few years ago when i heard rumors of the site trying to claim the rights to the artists' work. now, i have NO idea whether this is true or not (it sounds a little far-fetched), but i pulled most stuff off of there with the thought that i'd do a little more research, see what was true or not, etc, and then sign back on. i never got around to doing that, so never learned the final answer.

anyone?

DeviantArt doesn't claim rights to anyone's work. The wording specified that they had the right to use your work elsewhere on their site, like if you get a Daily Deviation or something. It wasn't a big deal. I use DA and it's ok for getting your work out there. Not a big deal, but if you work it right, you'll be seen by thousands of 14 yr olds around the world.

Pretty much what John said. It's a good site for exposure and the community as a whole is nice. A lot of mainstream pros that have been joining the site as well, which makes it a lot of fun going around and seeing what they're working on. Plus there are just so many extremely talented artists there to use as inspiration.

How do you all find the time to upkeep myspaces, websites, deviants....and work at the same time? Never mind checking out the forums and stuff on top of it.....

Myspace and soon deviant will be all I want. Comic space seems like a waste of time and I don't see the point of having a site specifically for my art.

What I have enjoyed about checking out deviant is the variety of art. It isn't just comic art but Photo manips, CGI, painting...awesome stuff there.

I like it and there's a lot of good stuff, but some of it isn't. I just dislike how people can be really popular on that site and all they have in their gallery is desktop screenshots or some crap.

Most of the darker side I know from encyclopedia dramatica but I don't go on there for any other reason than for resources and inspiration so I wouldn't know for sure. It is a good and popular place though.

Deviant Art is pretty cool, especially for keeping with guys like Mark Brooks and Lenil Yu. For the most part though, DA is a giant backpat....I saw a very talented artist put up some scribble and people were literally drooling over it.

Hehe, ya can see that on happen pretty much every comic site. On DA I think it's just magnified due to the sheer number of users. It is an attaboyfest though

DeviantART is more of a fun site than a serious site I'd say. As has already been mentioned, it's a huge ass-patting fest; but if you're just looking for somewhere to put your work it's good enough.
I really dislike most of the admins on DeviantART, and their stupid TOS; I only stay because I have friends there, and it's an easy way to keep in contact with them.

yes..I have had so much of my art moved by admins over there..it is rediculas.

They take the DC work that i have done and move it from the comic book art gallery to the fan art gallery...over and over.. i jeep moving it back.
I asked them what the deal was and i got this message.

Quote:
Hi there,
The image in question qualifies as fanart because they are pre-existing characters. The fact that you work for DC or it it licensed work for DC makes no difference as to where your art is placed on DA.
All images posted on DA containing characters such as Batman, the riddler, cat woman, Robin, Wonder Woman ect go in fanart.
The comics and cartoons category is for original characters created by deviants.

It would be impossible to moderate the galleries if we made exceptions for artists based on their place of employment. We have no way of knowing and it wouldn't make much sense if some artists were allowed to put batman in the wrong category while others were not.
It was moved into books in fanart because graphic novels are counted as books/novels and Batman and co are from graphic novels.

Please use the fanart category for your DC character images in the future.
Thanks for your cooperation.
