Here it is!!!! The new DW created Universe/title/story(Help Wanted)
Whew! It seems like all of the sudden the writing boards at DW are THEE place to be for collaboration. (I’m very glad to see all of the ideas and thoughts mingling on the board. While I have posted the idea of establishing a company/studio format that would require insane amounts of work by few for the greater good, I was wondering if we should all just work with one story line and make that the basis?
It seems that the general consensus is that we want a large playground to cover basically any genre we can think of. So here goes my own thought on this. I’ll try to cover all of my bases here, but if I forget somebody then please forgive me, it’s six in the morning and I haven’t had my coffee yet: I would like to give a tip of the hat to all of the following posters- W. Smith DarkWriter outlaw-Mojo proter R_Nelson fletch137 and to everyone else that I have forgotten...Thanks. These guys have just taken this idea and ran wild with it. But still we are lacking focus. I may take a brow-beating for doing this but here is the game plan fellas. Feel free to mull it over and hit me back with your own ideas. Universe Name: The Web World (A name that was posted by one of you fine folks out there, and I fell in love with it. Setting- Earth (Read below for special details) How it all begins: We begin our tale meeting a figure looking deep into the cosmos via a giant telescope. This figure is the Weaver. (A creation of W. Smith). The weaver is a viewer of the oddities that run throughout space. (Think Marvel’s Watcher) The Weaver has witnessed an anomaly on the other side of the known universe around a small planet that we know as Earth. The cosmic telescope records the rebirth of magic around our small planet, heralding the “age of change” according to the Weaver. What he is seeing is this... On earth, long before man roamed the globe, before the time of dinosaurs, the world belonged to another race. A race born of the very fabric of creation, a magical race that ruled the earth for thousands of years. In this prehistoric realm of magic lived all of the beings that we have come to know as myth in modern times. (Trolls, wizards, dragons, mermaids, banshees, etc...) Among these strange and wondrous beings there came to rise a terrible power. A band of dragons formed a brotherhood to torment the planet and throw the various other races into slavery and turmoil. The kingdoms of earth joined forces to remove this great evil from their world by casting out the dragons, by banishing them to another realm. All of the wizards of the age came together and opened portals across the globe that would draw the magic away from the dragons and suck them into the vortexes that the wizards had created. (Places like Stonehenge, Ester Isle, the pyramids...etc.) However, there was a problem as the Dragons were removed from this plane of existence the portals could not be shut down. Over flowing with magical force they ripped the world apart and consumed every magical being, from the lowest peasant to the mightiest wizard. The force was so great that it blocked the sun and sent the world into the first ice age, which lead to the rise of the dinosaurs and the current volume of history we all know. Now as the Weaver watches he sees that somehow the world of modern man has figured out how to reopen the portals, unaware of what is on the other side. As the magic is unleashed on our planet once more the world shifts. Things begin to change. The monsters and heros of old are re-emerging. Meanwhile the populace of humanity is altered by the powers that have been unlocked...transforming certain citizens in drastic ways...mutating them with incredible gifts and powers. Now the world today is separated into three lands, or kingdoms. The kingdom of Man- Where life is lived in fear of magic and mutation. Imagine the United States under Marshall law and testing every citizen for the mutant gene. (Where guys like Batman, daredevil, Captain America, Iron Man live...regular humans going above and beyond to protect the innocent)Amazing battle-tech suits of gigantic armor guard the borders, and technology is our only guarantee of safety. Where common folks must do battle with the paranormal on a daily basis. The kingdom of Magic- Where the myths of old prepare to go to war with the modern world. An underwater race sinks our Navy, the air force is constantly in a fight against legions of dragons/witches/other winged monstrosities. And the grudges of old are rekindled as the dragons make a power play to rule over all. The kingdom of Mutants- Where the rejects and criminals of our culture are cast off and sent to fend for themselves. Think about the super powered (X-men, spider-man, superman...people who gained their power from and outside source live) banding together to survive and trying to live in harmony. Now that will give us four titles to focus on. One anthology title- which could be written from the perspective of the Weaver as he watches these events unfold and then later give short little glimpse into each world. One book for each of the kingdoms (3) following a set cast set within their own little pieces of the planet. As we build up our characters and stories we will do a cross over event that will lead to a war between all three races bidding for dominance of the planet. So there it is. A comic universe created for, by, and with the aid of the DigitalWebbing community. Now who wants to work on what book? Do we have an editor yet? Any artist out there want to call shotgun on any of these titles now? Or would you rather wait for scripts? Tell me what you think fellas...this baby is chalked full of storyline goodness that you can really sink your teeth into. As for me, it’s time for some coffee, Dusty AKA- Lost in the Crowd you can e-mail me with questions, thoughts, or ideas at lostgrove@hotmail.com |

Sounds good to me as it helps lay a solid foundation for everybody to build up from. Being more drawn to the supernatural and the occult I can already say with some certainty that I will concentrate more on The kingdom of Magic, tho that does not preclude me from doing stuff in the other kingdoms (all are needed to make the universe work)
Oh and Web World was me...yay me! |

yeah I agree with W.Smith. Though I think this is a reasonable foundation to begin with. Just about anything is possible.

I'm gonna have a hard time wrapping my head around this one. We're going to have to discuss some kind of comprimise.
My problem is I've seen fantasy settings all over the place lately, and while I don't mind the idea of a super natural theme this is too much sword and sorcery. BTW there are some striking similarities between this and the Shadowrun Pen and Paper RPG. |

You had me right up until you announced this Earth was different than the Earth we live on.
The Weaver character (who I envisioned as kind of a Madam Web type broad) makes a good Crypt Keeper to narrate our stories and would allow us to tell very diverse stories but keep them cohesive. But I prefer to write about fantastic things happening in a mundane, recognizable world. If the whole world is as fantastic as you've described it, how special are the characters we're writing about (I call this the 'Syndrome syndrome'). For what it's worth, I do like the premise of a pre-human race of men draining magic from the world. It makes good background for anybody who wants to write about magic returning to the world or innocent people bungling into ancient magics or anything like that. But to make it the framework of Web World is to make all the characters that aren't telling those stories be subserviant to those who are. It'd be like if it were suddenly revealed that Bruce Banner turned into the Hulk because the gamma explosion released an imprisoned demon from the sands below who then occupied his body. Not a bad concept, really, but it completely derails his origin of scientist tampering with forces he doesn't understand and the dangers of untapped anger. This is the position I've been arguing from day one (which, heh, was yesterday). Saying 'this is where your superpowers come from' or 'this is what your world looks like' is a straightjacket. You might as well be saying 'this is why you can't have vampires' or 'this is why your character can't be in World War II.' |

Sorry, I just can't get the chat to load up.
Has anybody been keeping transcripts? EDIT: Okay, I tried again and was able to log into the chat room, but I honestly shouldn't have 'cause I'm at work (hehee). So now that I know it's possible, I'll have to see why I can't do it at home and hope to make contact after working hours. Last edited by fletch137; 01-11-2008 at 01:56 PM. |

Wow. So much has happened since the shot across the bow. Stupid weekends, family, kids, life ....grrr.
Anyway, so I'm so confused even after having read all the threads (I think I've read em all). Is this THE DEFINITIVE DW Universe? We writers are charged simply with writing up characters that will inhabit the place? |

KH we have two approaches which are gradually coming together. this one and another from w.smith.
i think there is a plan for an open contest using fletch's idea of just open character or team. Some stuff is often discussed in chat as well which you can access far left from the top of the screen. |
