Dirge of Cerberus

OK, I probably should have asked for comments on this before I asked hubby to buy it for me for Christmas... but what do people think of it?

No spoilers, please - but any hints on gameplay would be much appreciated.

I had a little go at it last night, and the first thing that annoyed me was that there was no 'tutorial' like there usually is in FF games, so I had no idea what any of the controls were. Then there's the aiming - how do you aim?! It's OK if you're shooting something at a distance, but if you're close to a soldier, he can shoot the crap out of Vincent while all VV seems able to do is hit him back. And he kept facing away from the soldier I wanted him to hit, and clobbering the nearest wall instead, allowing the soldier to get in a few extra shots.

On the plus side, the opening FMV was stunning, and there look to be some interesting characters in it. I didn't even get to meet Reeve - VV died and I just switched off. I'm sure, once I get familiar with the controls, it won't be so bad.

The general reviews I read were awful, so I avoided it. Gamerankings.com is your friend. From what I hear, your appraisal thus far is the general consensus. Gameplay is frustrating and far from refined, but graphics and a few tidbits of new story make it worth it for die-hard FF7 fans.
I'll just recommend what no one seems to actually do these days... read the manual.

This is what you call a tack on game. There is actually no reason for it to exist but to make money. I hope he pays less than 10 bucks for it.

It cost £15 - about $7.50.

And I always read the manual, and then think 'why did I do that? I've just had a funky tutorial!'

Edit - got my sums wrong; it's $30

I bought this game when it first came out. After about an hour or two of play it has never been touched again. I like mindless action games with lots of guns and violence...but this one was not just boring it was simply unmemorable.

A total waste of the £39.99 I paid for it.

Unfortunately, a lot of FPS's suffer from the "close up" combat syndrome (the one where the enemy bounces around kicking your ass and by the time you actually swing/shoot at them, they're already off screen at another angle shooting you again).

This game is not a FPS. It is a poor mans Devil May Cry.
