Photoshop Question

I have a quick question concerning photoshop. How do I add another drawing to an existing drawing. What happens if the drawings overlap, which I want them to. Is there some way to handle the overlapping...let's say with an arm overlapping another character's body? Thanks.

If you have both drawings open, select and copy the one, then paste it into the other. This will give you both images in the same document, on separate layers. You can then erase parts of the top layer so that the bottom layer shows through, and move the layers around so they overlap how you want them.

Well, are you talking about pencil drawings or full renders? You could take a pencil sketch, and paste a new drawing in and set the layer to screen.

If you have fully rendered material you'll have to mask, clip, erase, etc., but it would be best if you did that sort of thing on its own layer.

I have a fully rendered drawing. It's black and white.

I'm not sure if it'd work but you might jsut be able to change to opacity on the top layered drawing and then up the contrast to make it look like they over-lap

You can cut and paste to bring over another image, or you can just grab the layer and drag it onto the other image if you want to. Whatever you bring over will automatically be on top, you can re-arange this if need be.

Now to over lap the characters, the top character layer (ie the character closest to us) will have to have a transparent background. Hopefully, if it was planned, the characteris already on a solid background. In that case you could, depending on how clean your BG is, use the magic wand and select all that background area and delete it. then you have your one figure overlapping the other! boom!

If your top figure happens to have a background and you want to add the bottom figure, its more tricky. One way would be to plase the bottom figure on top (the figure is to be farther from the camera, but technically on the top layer), erase the BG on this figure. Then you can erase the parts of this figure that the other figure will overlap giving the appearance of overlapping. I recomend using quick mask mode to fine tune your selections for this.

Another way to solve this problem (and probably the way i'd go cause i like a good pain in the neck)-- Once again, we have a figure with a background, and we want to insert another figure between him (or her) and the background. Use whatever selection tool works best for you to select the figure on the background... i, personally, would use quick mask mode-- and recommend it. Once you have this figure selected cut it out... or copy (he'll be covered anyway) it. Create a new layer and paste the figure onto that layer. Move it around to get it right back over where it was if you have to. Then bring your other character in (like i said in the first paragraph). Select and delete this characters (i'm assuming) blank background. Move this character's layer in-between the background layer and the top (other figure) layer. To me this is the cleanest method, because if i want to move the middle figure around later, I can, as opposed to the previous method which would have me deleting it and bringing another one in and doing all the work with the erasing over again.

I find, as with anything, when i work in photoshop, I try and think about what I may have to do down the line and tailor my work to that. Something that takes me an extra couple minutes now, might save me hours down the line. Its just a good habit to be in.
