the sun used to be in front of him, because of the light/shadow in his face.

You know this could be easily fixed by painting over the sun. I don't know what medium was used but this could easily be fixed without loosing the wonderful detail of the face.

there could be a secondary lightsource "off camera" guys..
i don't think it detracts from the drawing..i love the bluriness of the picture.
i see a few facial muscles you've articulated in the face that i'm not familiar with, but we are talking about a barbarian warrior who get's clocked alot..so i'm really enjoying your rendition!

awesome work

Awesome, but since I can't see the light source it really bothers me. You might change the bg to a dungeon or something. I know throwing the sun in view is easy but I don't tend to scowl during beautiful sunsets. Really cool picture.

Heya guys!!

I think this piece is phenomenal!! It's nice seeing actual real organic skin being portrayed in a painting. Which is especially evident with the blue tones in the skin!! Fabo!! The only problem with the light source that I see is it not having a larger affect on his hair on the fringe edges on the left and right, more definitevely the right. I don't think you guys are taking into account that the sun doesn't just affect light in one direction. Light bounces off the ground, surroundings, clouds and whatever else it hits. Following your logic, his whole face would be in shadow and you wouldn't be able to make out anything. But light doesn't work that way. I don't think your problem has to do with the light source he's showing on the face but more the light source directly behind him that isn't affecting those areas on the outside of the figure.

As far as the scowl is concerned.....it suits the Conan character to me perfectly. I just don't see Conan smiling at a sunset....now Battle, Beer(ale) and Babes..now that would put a smile on his face!!! Haha!!

I think this is great Bixby and a great manipulation of the electronic medium you used!!! Props!! Props!!

I was actually refering to the sunset not fitting, not the scowl. Also, the sun is absorbed by things around it so your lighting and the pictures lighting is wrong which is why the others pointed it out. Kinda new to this huh? Since the sun is behind we shouldn't see anything true and that is kinda the point. Great pic to be sure but wow did you miss it.

Actually, Kwan is one of my favorite painters and trust me, he doesn't miss much.

As to your point, I don't really understand why you would want to change the image bg to accomodate the lighting issue. That would undermine the integrity of the artist intent and vision versus building on the strengths, if there are any to be found. If the lighting is wrong, thats fine. I like the piece but I will take these comments into consideration for future projects.

Thanks again to everyone who thinks enough of my work to comment. It means alot.

Well, the idea is that you ask for crits so the viewers give you things that should be rethought or fixed. In this case the lighting. Since you don't mind it being incorrect then the point wasn't to look for crits. It isn't undermining when you obviously threw it in as an afterthought. I was just pointing it out. Sheesh, next time I won't say anything and you can have all the butt kissing you want. They are suggestions, take them or leave them, most of ya'll do the latter so I don't mind.

Thats not what I mean OZ. I'm fine with crits and I am insulted that you would think I want butt kissing. And by the way, I did say I would consider your comments towards future projects, didn't I? That doesn't mean that I don't respect your point of view.

I'm just saying that either it stands on its own merits or it doesn't. Changing the bg, however, is throwing out the concept altogether. What if this was the assignment, " I want Conan walking through the desert with an expression of disdain."? Putting him in a dungeon doesn't fix my problem but accomodates my weakness. Your idea isn't bad, but with all due respect, comes off as yet another concept or "after thought" if indeed mine was in the first place. I think Kwan was addressing issues that I could rework within the context of the piece in front of him to improve it if possible versus "kissing butt".

Don't worry OZ. No love lost. I look forward to posting again.
