spirit of wangan.
hello i have been reading this site for around a year now and like it so i have gotten enough nerve to show some of my work.
i have written a graphic novel called spirit of wangan that i may start drawing it one day. i am in no way a writer so i didnt create a story with much emotion more so to show my love for cars. the following is eight pages but my computer lost two. it takes place in tokyo and follows a quick race on the highway. i just got photoshop cs3 and need to learn it. i love critique! it only helps me to learn what not to do, so please lay into me. thx ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i do wish i had larger pics but they cost to much from kinkos. i need to buy a scanner. and hope to do so soon. |

Good bg, great cars, bad people and anatomy. Just work on human structure and anatomy and these should come together nicely.

Not bad. The perspective is wobbly in a couple of spots, but the amount of energy evident in the backgrounds bodes well for how good this stuff is going to look in a year or 2. Right now the linework could use a couple of coats of polish.

I agree with OZ ... your backgrounds and cars are really, really good. But your human anatomy needs a lot of work ... the faces are pretty bad, which is too bad because there is so much energy in the rest of the work.

What the others said pretty much sums it up. There's definite potential here though. Keep drawing.

Ok so the review has bugged me. I love criticism! I love the honesty this board gives. I completely slipped on this and I didn’t catch myself.
In no way am I trying to create excuses! I have always had a rule…reference, reference, and reference. My problem is I didn’t follow my own rule. See I have never taken any classes for art. And over the last five years I gave it up completely for my company. I got married and just stopped drawing. Recently I have been inspired to sell my company and focus full time of my past dream of making into the comic book industry. Thankfully my wife is a very understanding person, and we both figure that if I cant make it doing something I love, well at least I tried! Better than regretting never going for it at all. The pages above are the first strokes I have taken in five years. I cant believe I screwed it up. I am no professional! I am better than that! lol. I see how I screwed up the masseter, and buccinators.i tried to hard to get the flatness of asian faces also. My point : reference, reference, and reference! I am so excited I have found this site. I hope you will be able to put up with me because I plan on showing more work and with the help of all on here, I can hopefully reach a child hood dream one day. Well I got allot of referencing to do, so again thank you all! Keep the criticism coming, its the only way to learn! ![]()

hey wangan. It's not all about references. Obviously for the cars its a big part. but what you really need is a firmer grasp on the human form. The kind of advice you'd get from editors and most of the better artists on this board is to look into life drawing classes and/or take a sketch pad out with you and sketch people in the park, on the bus, in a coffee shop. Really study people. At first I found it a bit of a chore, I just wanted to draw comic pages. But couple years down the road, i really enjoy it. Well except when people notice you drawing them and come over to see what you're doing. LOL.
Your inking could use some line variation. A better understanding of the process. What tools do you use? Do you use a french curve at all? there are a lot of good things in your storytelling and design. You could work on some more dynamic camera angles to add to the energy. It's nice someone else is posting images of cars on here I love drawing vehicles.

i seen your post you did between that and this pick. i think to myself i need to just publish my own work and forget trying to work for a big company.
i think to myself if someone that good is not published im screwed in ever having a chance! however then i pick up a book in a store and most of the time the work sucks. so i get hope again. like i said it is all about who you know. in my best i could never draw something like that! amazing as far as French curves, i have them. i find it easier to use free hand on everything. i don’t like inking as much as pencils. i use sharpie, and pilot precise. thx for the advice. this is a piece i did for my wife’s class. one of the students created the character with crayons and so i made a cover for his book. so don’t take it seriously. ![]() some more to critique. ![]() ![]()

I really like that second peice. Reminds me a little bit of travis charest in terms of the tech and things.
In regards to your level of skill. Every published artist has been at your stage at some point. It's just that by taking 5 years off you've probably fallen behind the curve. Your work isn't dissimilar to work I was doing a few years ago on an indy book called 'Government bodies' Quote:
