You can't copyright ideas, only works.

For more information, visit the U.S. Copyright Office's Frequently Asked Questions page.

Your copyright is created the minute you create the work. Officially registering a copyright provides an extra level of protection, but generally is unnecessary for most works. The main issue is to have proof of when the work was created. And, remember, you can only copyright the actual tangible work (a comic book, a script, even an outline), not the idea itself.

New creators usually place way more emphasis on copyright concern than is necessary. In the old days, placing a copyright statement/claim on the work was a requirement, but not anymore, so if you forget to add it, that doesn't mean you've lost copyright so long as you can establish you were the lawful author.

I wouldn't say that. If you don't officially copyright something then you can do nothing more than cease/desist. But I could still make a million dollars off your work until that order comes through and keep it. If you do it, copyright it.

Hey, that's why I provided the link to the U.S. Copyright Office. Copyright and trademark threads can be maddening.
