Branched thread about cars... and junk.

Sure I can. We were kind of highjacking the thread, so i made this one. American automobiles are my passion. Ever since I was 14 years old I have been collecting every book I could on the American automobile industry.
I have a degree in automotive technology, and I have owned many antique cars.
It's hard to explain, but when I look at a car, I read it like a book. On several makes I can tell you the engine size by the chrome and paint schemes.
I can't do it for every car, and there are a few I am not that familer with. I personaly like the odd makes.
The problem I have is working on them. I am a terrible mechanic. My father would often say if I could only find a way to make money off of my ability to name off cars, parts, and random trivia about them, I'd be rich.

Thanks for telling me that again...for the tenth time...

now, what's that other car in that body style?

Also, Gm makes a 575 big block engine. A v-8...why? They still make them . Guy at work said he saw one in a mag for 20 g brand new...I can't conceive of a possible reason to have anything bigger then a 350 but this thing is a monster. They put it in some 50s body style station wagon on that show where they pretend your car gets stolen when all the time they actually rebuild it.

Well, you said "M Something" that makes me think of the Malibu, but that was built off the Chevelle. The only other car that used the Camaro's parts for 1969 was the Pontiac Firebird.

I don't know why, I guess because they can?

I was thinking malibu (and it's not parts from a camaro, the nova, malibu and chevelle have a scaled back look of a camaro -68 camaro). Except when I think of the bu, I think the early 60s box body style so I wasn't sure.

65V

Now for a scare:

69 nova:

and my first experience with a nova:

scary huh? I hope the nova makes a come back via the 69 body type.

Here's an example of what I like to do. (Even though LGM doesn't care).

This is a link for a 1953 Dodge Lancer for sale on ebay.

That is not a 1953 Dodge Lancer, it is in fact a 1955 Dodge Royal with a 241 Hemi with a 2 barrel Stromberg carburetor.
Now if somebody would like to send me money for that, that'd be super.

Already has the 350 I want and the fenders look primed...

I'm actually pretty good at looking at and hearing cars too Jon...not as good as you though but I'm always dead on or pretty damn close...of course that's going 60s to modern.

What happens if you win?

There's a Coronet Wagon of the same year for sale just down the street from me for $1,500. (And if it still has it's engine, it's almost certainly a 270 Hemi).

You could combine the two and make yourself one sweet ratrod!

Now this is a thread I can respect. I grew up under a car and at one point was a mechanic... At one point I had to come to the sad realization that I couldn't afford to keep throwing money in a hole to make a muscle car.

Anyway I'm a Mopar kinda guy, what say everyone else?

I have no specific preferance. I've owned a lot of different makes. I would like to have a Hudson, Studebaker, Packard, or one of those other odd makes that didn't make it to the 80's.

I do have a favorite car though, and that's the 1966 Ford Galaxie 7-Litre

I had one in high school of that exact color, but mine had Crager 5 spoke rims, and no 7-litre.

I didn't say you weren't good at cars.

I wouldn't buy that Nova unless I had another Nova of the same year needing some parts. It'd cost more to rebuild that car than it would just to save some money back and buy a working one.

My mom has a Nova, it's been a great car too. Putting around for years and years with little to no problems at all. (It's a 1988 though).

My dad had a 65 Nova SS. He gave it to his cousin (madness!) so he could use it to get to work, and told him that when he didn't need it any more to give it back. His cousin went and sold the thing for like $50 (my dad had put thousands into it already), and they scrapped it. And to add insult to injury, my dad never even saw the fifty bucks!
Now he has a silver-gray 81 Corvette. I'm trying to get my license before he sells it, but my mom will probably kill me if I drive it
