Font switcheroo?

So, I'm in the grocery line waiting to check out. While waiting, I spy the cover to Archie's Pals & Gals double digest #109. I notice that the two words "Pals" 'n' "Gals" look to have two different fonts. The fonts looked interesting (for whatever reason. Maybe it was cause they were two different fonts). Tried to remember what they were.

So, I go online to check out the cover and this is what was there.

Didn't pick up the one at the check-out stand. But I know they were different! I must return to the store! I must know if there was a font switcheroo!

Clearly the one you've posted is the same...but I'm curious myself since this has been the logo as long as I can remember.

That's funny, before I even read the post, I saw the image and thought, "that looks like the Archie Digest font". Shows you how much it's permeated (which is good for Archie) into the general psyche.

Now, I know I'm not crazy.

So, the "Pals" looks like it was printed. "Gals" looks like it was written in cursive.
