Here’s a sketch of a fantasy character that I’m considering rendering as a painting. What do you think?

The only problem I have with this is the weapon. It looks rushed and poorly researched. The rest of it looks great though. Can't wait to see the painting.

Everything is great except for that hand(left). Fantastic pose, great action, wonderful foreshortening etc. I can't explain the hand. Great job.

Thanks all, for your C&Cs.

I’m working on a more detailed axe to add before I start painting. I’ll check my proportion on that back hand as well.

I don't know about poorly researched, but the weapon is distractingly tiny. Everything else is looking fantastic.

The hand looks fine to me, excellent job actually - if anything, it's the angle, i.e., the angle of the haft of the axe, maybe could be angled back more to the left, i.e., more of a 45° - I think it might work better as a compositional element that way.

Hafta redraw the whole hand to do that, and I think it looks OK like it is - if you'r egoing to paint it though, it's probobly better to get your composition nailed down if you plan on spending a lot of time painting it.

I happen to like the axe, looks like an authentic battle axe, 'course in comics, swords and axes are generally drawn larger than the figures that wield them, manga influence.

Smaller axes are easier to use in hand to hand battle, the larger ones were primarily counter cavalry weapons, too unwieldy for hand to hand, I think the size goes with the realistic style personally.

Again, it is an image, so assess it compositionally.

Here’s a look at some detailed battle axes I’ve been working on, rather than the Tomahawk size he’s holding now. Which is your fav 1,2,3 or 4?

All comments and critz are welcome.

I like the second from the left best, suits the fantasy nature of character I think - the handle could be a little longer maybe.

The next one to the left is a little too complicated, you don't want it to distract from the character, but that's just my opinion.

I forgot to mention before that I like the right hand, but the forearm could probobly be a tad thicker.

I agree with this critique. The foreshortening on the weapon is too strong, unless this is supposed to be a small tomahawk then the first critique would apply, make it look like a small tomahawk!!!

Otherwise kick ass pic.
