I would prefer the Vision condoms because I want them to feel intangible

I like this, but you knew that it was funny, so I won't stay there...here's something you can use...
1. The Stroke on your balloon is too wide, it doesn't fit the font or the art. Typically when lettering on a computer you'll be good with a .75 line width...unless the art is really out there, and this isn't. 2. When lettering, the letter "I" is used in two different ways. If it's a pronoun or a propername, use the "I" witht he crossbars (like you have here), but if it's not...and especially if it is inside of a word...use the "I" without the crossbars (the lowercase I in most computer comic fonts). In other words, use the lowercase "I" in almost all cases. The reason is because the crossbar-"I" has so much air in it, it becomes emphasis within a sentence, forcing the reader to pause a nano-second longer than they otherwise would. It's subtle, but it makes all the difference when presenting a professional piece of work. Again, GREAT stuff!

Hey Kep...
Cool! Thanks for that great feedback. Looking at it again, I will go back and redo the balloons (as well as killing the stroke a bit as well). It's amazing the things that you don't see at 1:30 or 2:00am in the morning. Usually, I use a 2 point stroke for all my balloons. I've tried going with a 1 point stroke but that just seems too light - at least in terms of my web comic. This particular one was at 3 points I believe. I don't know why I decided to go so heavy with this particular balloon though... In terms if the "I" situation, I'm using Blambot's Anime Ace 2.0 BB. I totally hear what you're saying about the serif (capital version of The I) but I have also found that using the san-serif, lower-case version of the I in Anime Ace tends to blend in with a lot of other letters. Maybe I should use a different font, perhaps? I like Blambot's Anime Ace font but that tricky use of the "I" can be hard to solve. The best (and easiest) way I've been able to solve that issue is by using the capital I version in the font. But even when I do that, it gets to be a pain on another level... spell-checking! Mainly because every word comes up as a misspelling when I use the capital I. LOL! Anyway, this wasn't supposed to be so long of a reply. I just wanted to thank you for the good critique and to let you know I'll put that feedback to good use, but thought it might also be good to give you some background info on why I did certain things as well. That's not meant to be defensive because your points are well taken - and I am going to go back and re-do the shape of the balloons as well. I also have to fix two of the stars on the condom box as well. Thanks for the compliments of the humor and illustration of the cartoon. That goes for everybody else. In fact, I might just have to do a HULK condom add - that's really a great idea and I'm kicking myself for not thinking about it before! LOL! -Chris My Art Blog |

The problem with strokes is it can vary depending on the art. As a rule i try to keep the stroke about the same as the foreground width of the inked lines. Another technique is to use the same width as your panel boarders (or an average). However, never use a larger stroke than the panel boarder unless you're going for an effect, it draws too much attention.
AA 2.0 is a great font, but I agree the kerning on the SANS-I is a bit tight. When I've used it (which is rarely...I have other Blambots I prefer) I increase the tracking to +20 or +25 and have been very happy with the result. It's a tight font and loosening it that much helps overall. Of course, that's just me...some guys like it tight. As an unpaid endorsement: if you're going to be doing a lot of work in this style, Blambots latest pay font DUTY CALLS might fit really nice here -- it friendly and witty in a way few fonts are...I wouldn't hesitate. Still, great stuff, more!

Hey Kep,
Cool! Because I'm a cheap bastard, I'm a Blambot free font whore but I'll definately check out "Duty Calls". The problem here is that I like so many of Blambot & Comic Craft's fonts, I could never afford all the ones I really want! LOL! Little off-topic - and I'll move it to the Lettering section if it's more appropraite there - but do you have any experience with having fonts created from one's one handwriting? What's the best company for that? I know Fontographer can do that but I'm also a lazy bastard (and doing web design full-time keeps me pretty darn busy as it is) so if I can find a relatively cheap or inexpensive company, that would be great! Any suggestions, resources or web sites I can check out? -Chris |

Blambot has plenty of freebies that'll work great here. Have you tried WEB LETTERER? It would also be a good choice and comes in free and pay flavors.
Yes, i have a couple of suggestions for you on that, PM me.
