Some Inks!

It has been awhile since I have been here. I guess I will start things off by posting some inks. I thought I would also show you the pencils of one of them. Thanks.

Nice inks, I dig them, keep posting, for some reason this section is starting to look like a deserted island.

Digital Inks?
On the Joe Mad piece you really didn't follow what he drew especially in the face and the cloak, plus you didn't really add anything to the linework just basically a trace job and ignoring the actual artwork.

That’s not good tracing if that’s tracing, I thought this person was trying something different with that one.

With the MAD piece I had to try something different since it depends allot on shading rather than line. And although this is digital it still is unassisted brushwork so it is hard to get the line exactly the same especially when you are working on a deadline. I am not completely happy with it but I will get better. Thanks.

Can you do traditional inking with a brush or quill nib? Sometimes without that set of skills knowing how to ink digitally may not work as you just won't know what the finished inks should look like. Have to have an idea what should be before trying to make it so. I like that Mad drawing and yeah it was meant as a standalone drawing. But if attempt to ink a shaded drawing you have to try a little harder to make it come to life. Like the shaded face could have been a duotone zipatone effect. The cloaks fading effect could have been ink spatter or simple fading lines or a dry brush effect.

I don't think you did a bad job with the Mad piece, but admittedly some of the elements in the glove are not separated enough. This seems to be your biggest problem.

In the Spider-Woman piece, there's a lack of solid blacks. The hatched shadow doesn't make her "pop" from the wall. If you made those shadows solid, it would have had a much better effect.

The JLA is worse (sorry, just being honest). Some of the lines on MM are actually thinner than lines in the background. Big ol' no-no.

You need to work more on separation of elements. The shading effects (and how to 'interpret them') will come naturally once you master the former.

Yeah I can do traditional inking and it comes out allot better as I have more control of the tools and with the paper under me I feel that I can see more of the work also. I didn't want to do any FX like zippotone cause I wanted to stick with lines on that one. It really was a study of tone into line. I think I like the way the cape came out but I must confess that I was a bit lost on it and stumbled onto what I have there.

Thanks.

Yeah the separations that you have pointed out are inherent in the original works and when I ink something that is not mine I am not yet sure as to how far I should go with changing the piece.

The shading under Spider-woman looked as though there was great effort made into purposefully creating it. And Although I think it would have looked allot better in black it doesn't invalidate the artist's choice and I didn't think that it was my call to make.

On the Bynre piece I do see the separation issues and I could have addressed them if I noticed them then.

These were my first digital works and I was really fighting with control. The more I do the steadier I get. Also the crits are helping allot in pointing things out. The only thing that I am having a hard time with is just how far I should go with changing what the penciler put down on the page. Perhaps this is why I tried the MAD piece because it forced me to make changes.
