when the lettering in a balloon is italic, try skewing your balloon a bit to reflect the slant of the lettering. it doesn't take much.
great tip. so sensible that i'm kicking myself for not already doing this.

What a great idea, Clem.

Reminds me of my early samples--um, way back when the earth's crust was still cooling.

I would subtley "tilt" my balloons in the direction of the speaking character to direct the reader's eye.

I was trying to make new rules--long before I had learned them well. A bad mistake.

A few days later, I was up at the DC offices showing the stuff to Todd.

He asked about the tilting and we talked about it--I gave up that idea the same moment.

What's different about yours, though, is it fits the skew of the letters--I had no skew to my letters back then.

Amazingly, despite clearly bold balloons, the idea of an italic balloon never occurred to me. Too cool!

okay, i'll bite. how in the world do you do that seamless, irregular underline effect? when i've tried it, it ends up wonky, like a staircase.

every time i think i'm learning how to design type, you pull a stunt like this.

I fake the irregularity. I "draw" them in AI with my cintiq, the same way I sometimes draw the letters for a font.

I have a bunch of pre-made underlines of different lengths and shapes.
