Nice. I'd use a softer green, more akin to the Spectre's cape there; but it's looking good. Maybe I'd inch the last caption closer to the lower right corner, to make it "the pageturner".

I decided to try my hand at this lettering activity because it contains a nice mixture of balloons and captions. I know you're all probably sick of seeing me post stuff, but i've had a lot of days off this week. This is all I can do to keep myself sane

Nice! I've never even paid attention or noticed that, but now that you've all pointed it out to me I can't help but gravitate towards each "I"

Spectre: That X-Men page looks good... my only issue are the pointers, or balloon tails. They're not the same style or shape US superhero comics tend to use... but that'd be all from my end.

I was not aware US comics had their own tail style. I always figured it was just whoever drew the balloons. How do they differ from these?

Every letterer, or letterer style will have their own shape; but grab a handful of current US comic book pages and you'll notice the shape of the tails, then compare them to yours. Yours are more "curved tube with pointy end", while the standard ones (see examples below) are more "wavy lock of hair". I know, my descriptions suck... just look at the examples.
![]() The tails you used on your first go at the D&D page (first post in this thread); while too thick (as several letterers here pointed out), are more the "waby lock of hair" shape, while the ones you've made for this X-Men page. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n...uxf_06_022.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m-1D-tsDF0...006_int_LR.jpg http://i.newsarama.com/images/action..._page-9_02.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...omics9_004.jpg EDIT: Looking again at your page, more closely, I think the basic shape of your balloon tails is correct; it's just that the standard ones are wider where they connect to the balloon; and a bit shorter in general (unless, of course, they need to point to a character that's far from where the dialogue balloon can be posted. Check out Richard Starkings' balloon tutorials, and Jim Campbell's balloon tutorials. |

Here is my first attempt at yet another one of our lovely lettering activities. This is the first attempt i've made at lettering sound effects. The font might be a bit small, I couldn't really decide.

I think at this point this thread's name should be changed to from first attempt to first attempts.
Here is a second attempt at the previous page. ![]() As always, any critiques would be awesome. |
