you have a good start but with the picture batman should be the main focus, but the way its colored the eye is drawn away from him and to the villians on the screens because of how saturated they are colored. you can use color holds to push them back similar to how adam hughes did in this http://goodcomics.comicbookresources...10;02;01PM.JPG everything in the picture should be used to focus on batman, the stalagtites and stalagmites are to frame the picture so they dont need the same amount of attention as other areas of the picture. i would study colorists that you like. steven firchow would be good because you like david finch. your using white for your highlights and its not really how light works, to give a sense of believability it helps to have light fall off in the picture, meaning that light will be more intense on his head and fall off and not be as intense as it goes down his body to his legs. try to think of light hitting the form as a whole and not hitting each part seperatley the quads, hamstrings and calves are all rendered seperatley. a lot of people myself included started off using white to highlight everything and black for shadows. as you get better at coloring you will start to see and be able to use warm and cool lights and shadows. james gurney has a great book called imaginitive realism and another book on just color theory that will help. i think i saw you were on gutterzombie, i have some pdf's i saved from there about coloring that might help if your interested. i dont mean to be harsh with all of this i think you said you were learning how to color so hopfully it helps some.

I agree with the highlights and I also agree with the some things deserve less attention than others rule.
However the center of this piece was not batman for me I did the villians brighter so you would see them first. So that was done on purpose. Every colorist who colored this would have made batman the center of attention and I just did not want to do that here. The stlagtights where done that way just because it made it look 3D to me so that may not be right I was just going for a 3D effect so I guess that did not work so well. Be hey it's a learning experience. Thanks for taking the time to look at my work and give me some pointers. |
