SFX demand everything you've got

sound effects are your advertising. they're your personality and temperament on the page. they can't be compromised. they're probably the hardest thing to do, and moreso when there are a lot of 'em.

if you're tired or feeling lazy, do a different page. hold off on them till you can give them everything you've got.

i did 21 pages yesterday, which is a lot for me, but in the wake of San Diego, a half dozen late books landed in my lap over the past few days, and all of them need to be turned around fast. you all know what this is like. you get in the zone, and can work for hours without getting up.

i finally hit a page that was chock full of sfx. it's a good script, wonderfully drawn. i looked at the sfx in the script, looked at the page, and decided it was Miller Time.

Yup. I always think a page with sound effects as a little Christmas present from the writer to the letterer; be rude not to make the best job I can of it!

Cheers

With SFX--and lettering in general, I'm inspired by the work in front of me...sweet art and a wonderful script go a looo-oong way in inspiring me to give it my all.

If the work I'm given is sub-standard work, I tend to go auto-pilot and give good work...but not my best. Sometimes with small press stuff, I'll grab an old FX from my file that doesn't even match the one in the script [a Whump instead of a Whumph!] to save time. It looks good...and so far no complaints.

But If I have something wonderful in front of me, I love to take the time to make the stuff pop--because the story deserves it.

yeah. like Tonci Zonjic, for example. it's a total joy to letter on him.

the really good ones also present the fewest problems to solve.

Zonjic as Alex Toth follower is an artist that is always working the room and location
for text and balloons in the panel before start filling it with drawing.
We can see this on his thumbnail layouts.
He also does his own balloons, lettering and SFX for his European comics.

Like it should be.
