Tips for coloring clothing?

In this piece I'm having trouble figure out the best way to color clothing but more importantly the purple shirt. I'm pretty much satisfied withe the way I'm coloring leather even though I'm not done yet.

Note: The art isn't mind. The penciller just let me color it for practice.

For me, the thought process is the same regardless of what the object is called, be it skin, fabric, leather, metal, whatever. First, I have to determine what type of material it is supposed to look like. Fabric can be anything from a dull loose weave cotton to a shiny rayon or silk. Use that to determine how it's rendered. Reference. Shiny have harsher highlights and more bounce light effects. Dull is less dynamic in its range of value and hue. Don't know if that helps, but it's what I do.
