the hatching is looking good and thats not easy to do. And the figure proportion and perspective is spot on. it has a very continental European or south American look. Some of the backgrounds are a little too indistinct for my taste blobby bits by virtue of being blobby bits lack shape of weight.

Great eye, random! The backs are on occasion composed of out of focus reference material. Follow me for a sec. Some buildings are blown up to the degree that they're practically unrecognizable. The rub is that once I've enlargened them to blobs I reduce them after rendering, and God-willing, the blobs re-materialize into structure. That's the story I'm sticking with. I love experimentation. Sometimes it works...

Jose, these are great. Love the linework, creating very moody pieces accentuating the tone and content of the images. I especially like the second and fourth images, as they strongly remind me of Gene Colan's work, not as a comparison of style, but more of perspective and design. Impressive.

At this point, have you applied this style of heavy lines to any sequential work? Is it too time-consuming or a viable technique for a longer page count?

And for reference of styles, its remind me of Sergio Toppi and advertisement illustration.
Which doesn't take a bit off from this excellent work.

Thanks, dudes. Sergio Toppi and Gene Colan. One of them fired up my imagination as a kid and sent me reeling into illustration. Sequential pages have been made of these panels, as well as similar ones in other threads and soon to be made into a comic. I've gotten a few offers since I've been posting for reproducing the style for other stories. But you're right Creative, considerations have to be made for the time it takes to produce the work. More suited for a Euro piece but can be adapted with the right schedule. Thanks gang!

Fantastic work Joh! as soon as saw it I thought "TOPPI"...sad story about him, I was at ROMICS, the roman comic convention last october, and while walking around I bumped into a small stand that was dedicated to his work..I stopped and was looking through his latest book (momotaro) when I gazed up, and saw him sitting there, quietly drawing..I quickly looked around and saw that nobody was paying any attention to him, I was so angry, but simultaneously glad cuz I was able to get a cool sketch from him. The problem is that 99% of the people attending had manga blinders on...now dont get me wrong I loooove manga, but this guy is a genious and deserves a lot more recognition than what he got at that con, in his own country...oh well..I digress, great stuff Joh..Im really impressed and inspired by it!

That is some story, Tenguku. I still love the fact that you mentioned comic book conventions in Rome! I love travelling through Europe and finding different shows featuring artists with alternate drawing styles and influences. It's all very inspiring. And Ten, I agree with you. We all see really talented craftsmen and women without the notoriety and attention they may deserve. Makes you wonder why some of us draw the way we do. I've always told artists to just "get in" and work it out from the inside. Plenty of artists come into various industries drawing one way, only to change it up along the way. Whatever makes us happy I guess. Can you post Toppi's sketch?!

For all the hatching you do, your work is highly detailed. I love the look, you could almost get away with not inking this stuff. Please continue posting more!
