I'm glad that the tutorials were of some help. You did good for your first attempt, better than mine. The one thing that jumps out at me is that your balloons are covering up some of the characters. Granted, you're working with a wallpaper but try to place balloons in the page's empty space.
I would recommend that you download the lettering templates from my site and start lettering the activities that are posted here. BTW, the average font size is generaly 6pt - 7 pt with a leading that is .5pt - 1pt larger than the font size. I use Comicraft's Comicrazy at a size of 6pt and a leading of 6.5pt. Welcome aboard and we look forward to seeing what you can do.

first try
You're missing a comma there, I think. And the final balloon should be restacked into 3 or 4 lines, so it doesn't look so awkward.
And why is that one balloon angled? I'd fix that. Otherwise, nice job for a newbie. It IS fun, isn't it? Kurt Hathaway |

ouiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
when you've got a word that's blown out to gargantuan proportions, like the word "ouiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii", there are some fun ways to play with it.
one is to stagger the word — that is, let every other letter be placed higher or lower than the others, so that the word appears to bounce. another is to draw an S-curved path, and then run that single word as text on the path. that's kinda fun. i like doing that. these are the kind of things that one does without even thinking about it when the job is hand-lettered. both effects really benefit from type that is designed specifically for that purpose. if you design your own type — which i really, really recommend you do — then it's smart to have one font specifically intended for staggering. i don't know what type face you used for your example, but if it came from Comicraft, you are free to manipulate it in a design program (like FontLab or Fontographer) to get the effect you want. or at least from discussions i have had with John Roshell, it appears that Comicraft has no problem with your doing this, as long as you don't attempt to sell the reconfigured font. i don't know what BlamBot's policy is regarding this. nice job, Ielle77 (boy, did your parents give you that name?). it embarrasses me that someone with some design sense can do this well the first time out of the chute. |

lol
Actually I'm a girl and Ielle IS my name... sorta... it's Part of my name my parents gave me. But everyone calls me that (even in the real world. It's pronounced Yell). Anyway, thanks so much, I appreciate the compliment (doing so well out of the chute part lol). I'm a photoshop junky by nature (if you ever want to see any of my photo manipulation stuff check http://www.uggabugga.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1268). And was accepted into the illustration program at RIT, but i decided my first and true love is writing. However i just can keep myself away from all things art. This was my first spin in Illustrator. I'm hoping to get better at this and try to get my foot in the door this way. I'm a writer first and formost (thus the reason why turned down RIT.. uh that and PRICE lol) but you gotta meet folks any which way you can plus i really enjoyed this btw: anyone know of some good sites to get blank sequential pages to practice on? |
