Avatar Press
Anyone else reading any of Avatar's books? They're publishing awesome creaator-owned works by Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Jamie Delano, they've published a bunch of Alan Moore stuff.
The work is like the best of those aforementioned writers, kind of boiled down to their essence. Better works than those writers are doing for the big companies, that's for sure. Check out Ellis's Black Summer, Doktor Sleepless, Scars, Dark Blue, and Strange Kiss/Killings because he has a new Gravel series out. Check out Ennis's Chronicles of Wormwood and Streets of Glory. And 303. And when it comes out, I would definately pick up Delano's Narcopolis. |

I'm LOVING Doktor Sleepless from Ellis.
What I wanna know is how in the world Avatar manages to get all these top notch guys at a company, yet don't sell nearly as many comics as other larger companies. And...why do these writers go specifically to this indie company? |

Black Summer has been amazing so far. The story is great, and Juan Jose Ryp's art is a plus.
Wormwood was quite entertaining and funny and sweet, somehow. I was really impressed with it, and, while I expected God to be a schmuck in the series (come on, it's Ennis we're talking about), he surprised me for how much respect he showed Jesus. |

I'm thinking Avatar gives these writers complete free rein to do what they want with who they want. Flexibility of projects the way only an independent can do. |

As much as I love Ellis I really haven't read a lot of his work from Avatar. I think I had the original Strange Kiss seires at one time and sold it off.
Someday I'll go back and grab a bunch of this stuff. Soktor Sleepless has me intrigued.

The only book I have enjoyed thus far from Avatar is Gravel, and the only thing that was released was the #0. I don't think the Avatar stuff is Warren's best work. I just wish he would get back to Desolation Jones.
Just my 2 pesos worth. |
