This is a rule I have followed in my own projects--sure, throw monumental amounts of the red stuff around, but write it well, and with actual characters, or it's all mostly for nought.

I understand what you're saying. My editor used to demand gore, and I used to fight to make sure the stories came first.
I used to write for b&w horror comics Splatter and Slash (Northstar Comics) in the early 90's. I'm putting some of them up online these days in an anthology at GraphicSmash.com called,
A Gathering of Crows . The site is currently subscription-based, but my stuff will soon be free.
Looking back on my earlier stories, I just wish I wrote as well as Dirk.
