Four hours. Two full length mirrors. Two handheld mirrors. A handful of charcoal powder. Four charcoal pencils. Several charcoal sticks. Two erasers. And one art-Nazi looking over my shoulder. Self portrait as assigned by Siobhan Byrns.

cool! this is the best stuff i've seen from you!
keep going in this direction! if you continue to use reference for everything!! every pose, and put this much work into all your pieces, you'll only improve in leaps and bounds!!
and the funny thing is that this is pretty much how i pictured you looked- lol
keep 'er at it!
joel,
Awesome work. i don't even bother to crit you anymore because you develop artistically at such a fast pace it's more fun just to sit back and watch it happen.
Keep posting. Do more like this.

The Machine: Well, since Siobhan has started sending assignments via email, hopefully I'll have the incentive to keep spending this much time on my pieces. Thanks :)
Dano: lol. But I like getting crits! It helps me develop even faster.
Jon Dahl: Aw, it's ok. You can always comment it on my MySpace. (i'm such a comment whore...)
Ravencore and Cypershaw: Thanks Guys!
Matrok: :w00t:  Thanks
Capo: lol. Nah, in ten years I look at this and hate it. Even now I can point out all my screwups.

very nice job CG... the features came out really nice, especially the eyes through the glass lense... brava!
(Love to see you appply this technique to a superhero character when you have time.)

w00t. ^_^
That is actually a really awesome idea. I may do that on my next pic (I have to finish the Spidey I'm working on first). I need to get some charcoal powder tone the BG.

Very impressive, my art teacher had us do a bust only from the shoulders up with a small handheld mirror. It was a cool challenge since you had to try and keep the same pose and expressions. Yours turned out very well.

You could go darker in the skin tones. Seems a little flat. Three values ranges at least will give you the volume you are looking for. Nice

DwcIllustrator: That sounds really cool, but really challenging. Do you mean like a sculpture-bust? Because that sounds crazy-cool.
Joel_Herrera: I was uneasy about making the tones too dark, since I have such light skin and I stopped working when Siobhan told me to. She told me not to over work it. Dunno. *shrug* Thanks, though!
