This is a double elimination tournament but no shows don't get a second chance. All art show be posted in the the art thread. The art thread for this group is:
http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98911
6 will move into the next round of Bracket 1 the rest move on to Bracket 2. No shows get the boot.
The art can be in any stage of completion and in any medium, but it has to be your art and it has to be in the art thread by the deadline.
The deadline is 14 October 2006 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time (currently GMT-4). That's 3 weeks!
If your art is not in the thread within 6 hours of that time, you will be considered a no show.
If your art changes after that time, you will be considered a no show.
If your art post is edited after that time, you will be considered a no show.
The subject can be interpreted as loosely (within reason) as you wish. If I'm vague, it's purposely vague. However if when reference is provided that should be the reference used.
Have fun.

Didn't have time for reference, so I pulled out somthing that I didn't need reference for. The DW women will appear at another time.

it has more to do with beliefs. Sorry.
LilGreenMan... my first thought was to have nothing to do with this as well. I'm a Christian, I don't want to support the tarot in any way. But then I realized... thanks to the loose guidelines... that this drawing doesn't have to support the tarot... and then I got a kind of clever idea for a composition.
Just my two cents. You stand on your beliefs any way you want to, I respect that.

Do you guys boycott Thor comics too?
umm.. just want to clarify something. You said that we have 2 weeks to do this illustration but the deadline is listed as Oct 14 which is 3 weeks away. Or is Oct 14 the day the voting round ends??? Don't want anybody to be late because of this is all....

I'm christian also... but I'm not so blinded by my faith that a let a piece of paper bother me... but hey... I respect such blind faith, it takes alot of control to follow something unequivically without questioning the things around you. Of course I'm catholic, so I can do whatever I want. :D

One Question: Just so I'm clear, since you provided that one link (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/hierophant.shtml), are we meant to design an image based on that version (i.e. redesign Taurus the Earthly Bull)? Or are we free to use all of the various versions/interpretations there have been of the card, and the symbolism involved, as inspiration? I'm figuring it's the 2nd, but I just wanted to be sure... Thanks!

3 weeks? That is most cool!
Now I won't have to be a no show after all! I thought I was going to have to bow out this round because my wife is due to give birth to our new baby any day now.
Now I have just got to think about how I am going to illustrate this . . .

Yeah GRIGRIMAN, you'll have a full 3 weeks with No sleep. Should produce an interesting result.
Myself, I've just had a week off work thanks to my 2 lwonderful children and their lovely, dry-retching, snot producing viral infections. One of the many JOYS of parenthood.
Anyway... good luck to everyone who competes, this shoud be an interesting task.

When you first get into the draw-off forum there's a display options box at the bottom of the page, choose to view threads from the last month and your art thread will magically appear.

Sevans - Awesome job! And I love your comment about leading the "fool".
Man, I haven't even started yet... the last couple of weeks just flew by. I've got a similar idea for a "themed tarot"; I guess it's just a matter of me getting off my ass and doing it. ;)

Yeah, first off I thought about Anakin and Yoda or Obi-wan, But Anakin didn't have the 'innocence' and lack of knowledge that the descriptions mentioned.
Looking forward to seeing your pic.
Well, thanks to an adware virus that automatically installed onto my computer the other day I am unable to do much of anything to post my pic. However, my pic was incomplete and I have no intention of continuing with this tournament as it has already taken more time away from my other more important projects as it is. Thanks to ljamal for hosting this little shindig although I have a bunch of suggestions/comments if you plan to do this again (or just do a post-mortem). It was kinda fun. Good luck to the rest of you. I'll keep watching and voting in the meantime.
-Cheers

So, the only idea I kept coming back to was a DC universe themed tarot deck, but I put off the actual drawing till the last minute (of course). I'm still thinking of working up a complete list (of atleast the Major Arcana), and didn't want to rush this one, so I went ahead and posted what I had so far (didn't want to no-show completely).
The Heirophant is supposed to be a connection between mortals and the gods, as well as a mentor figure, so I figured that Shazam would make the most sense. Cap and Adam take the place of the pillars representing obediance and disobediance, and Junior and Mary would be the pupils at his feet. The Rock of Eternity and the lightning bolt take the place of the keys to heaven.
It was pretty cool to see Lynndavid also go with a DC inspired theme, although I'd say he totally whupped me in the art department! Awesome job! :)

Hojo,
I had the same problem recently and received valuable help from geekstogo.com. You might want to try them.

Pi0trov,
Thanks for the kind words. I think the idea behind your solution was very appropriate and would love to see a more finished version. I made a list of possible characters to use and can't believe the Marvel Family didn't occur to me. The DCU really lends itself to this theme. One friend to whom I sent my image even suggested an all Fourth World themed tarot. I don't know that I'll follow through, but a couple of images spring immediately to mind.
I, like some others, had some religious reservations with the subject matter, but felt it was broad enough to interpret in such a way that I was comfortable with. My friend, Chet, made some comments about the tarot, which I'm going to quote:
"Tarot cards have been, and still are, used for card games. For most of the 19th & 20th centuries, people thought our modern cards had developed from the tarot. Now we know it was the other way around. And the "royalty" cards in the tarot were based on historical types of figures: King David being, IIRC, the King of Cups, for example.
Like most things, they can be used for good, evil, or indifference. So can regular cards, which have been used for fortune-telling a lot more than tarots.
There's a lot of New Age (which is really the Same Old Stuff) nonsense about Tarots revealing this or that -- the same nonsense as claiming there's any real power in the Same Old Stuff. This isn't power. We both know what power really is.
That Christians fear the tarot is understandable, even justifiable. Wicked people used and use them (and other props) with intent of gaining power. Satan just loves to promise power when ... he really has no power to give. Unless one counts impotence (not sexual impotence, though I suppose it could be included) as power."
It's probably too late to get anybody to change their mind in time to complete an entry, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway.

I am sorry that my entry is unfinished. My heart just was not in this. My brother passed away last friday, just four days before my daughter was born. I tried to come up with something just to stay in this tournament, but was unable. I have posted a WIP but in all honesty had things been different it would probably have been discarded and I would have gone in a different direction.

GRIGRIMAN,
I imagine I speak for everyone in saying I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I'm amazed you posted anything. When my son was born, it was a very difficult time, with seemingly no sleep for days. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter, I hope the joy she brings to your life will help offset the loss of your brother.

I don't think I can really add anything to what Lynn's already said - I too am impressed that you posted an entry. My condolences go out to you, as well as congratulations on the birth of your daughter.
