Tournament Round 2

Round 2 of the Draw-Off Tournament Officially begins on 27 August 2006 and will run through 6 September 2006. Participants will have until 2 September 2006 at 11:59:59 PM EASTERN Time (currently GMT -4) to post their art in the art corresponding art threads. Voting will begin as soon as the polls are up on 3 September 2006 and will continue until the poll close on 6 September 2006 (around 11:59:59 PM Eastern).

Why the change in the voting?

the voting period for round 1 was too long and most votes occurred in the first 3 days
Baltimore Comicon is the weekend of the Septemeber 9 and 10 and this way any one going to Baltimore will know what the draw-off topic is before leaving.


This week is the first time we will have 2 brackets. Bracket 1 will be composed of the 51 survivors from Round 1. Bracket 2 will be made up of the 27 cast-offs.

Bracket 1 Round 2 will have 4 Groups of 10 and ONE group of 11. 5 from each group in Bracket 1 will move on to Bracket Round 3. no shows will be completely booted from the contest. The rest will be part of Bracket 2 Round 3.

Bracket 2 Round 2 (yeah, yeah, there was no Bracket 2 Round 1) will have 3 Groups of 9. Only 3 from each group will move on to Bracket 2 Round 3.

I will be posting the groups and links to the Round 2 threads to this thread later after the end of Round 1.

I've gotten some questions as to why Bracket 2 only sends 1/3 to the next round.
Bracket 2 keeps getting an influx of new participants from Bracket 1. If 1/2 were kept then Round 2 would last about 3 rounds longer than Bracket 1.

Look at it like this ...
in an ideal world where there are no no shows B1 (Bracket 1) R2 (Round 2) will send 26 to B2 (Bracket 2 ) R3 (Round 3). If 1/2 went on from B2R2 then B2R3 would have 26 from B1R2 and 13 from B2R2 for a total of 39 for B2R3. B1R3 will only have 25.

As it is B2R3 will have 9 from B2R2 and with no shows probably about 18 or so from B1R2. Each round in B2 will send on a different number of participants but usually you can expect about 1/3 to go on but that may change based upon the numbers.

I tried to do all Milla movies, but after Ultraviolet, Resident Evil, 5th Element and the Messenger, I really couldn't sink low enough to have someone draw something from Zoolander or He Got Game or any thing else she was in. Just considering the Messenger was bad enough.

I do love me some Milla or Milla-Mommy as Nesta calls her. She's my Gimme :D

How do you come up with this stuff?
I stumble into the topics. This week was going to be mythical creatures but then I came upon my list of dicarded topics and saw Fifth Element. Then I tried to come up with 5 Milla movies and only found 4 suitable ones, so then I look to sci-fi movies. At first is was the couples from each movie (Korben and Leeloo, Anakin and Padme, Trinity and Neo) but then I thought that Cat may have a Han and Leia or Anakin and Padme laying about so I put the villain and the heroine together in a bar. I chose the bar because I got this image of Sarah Connor and T-1000 together having drinks and couldn't get it out of my head.

Incidentally, all the movies feature bars at some point if you consider the Star Wars prequels as one movie and the original trilogy as a separate movie (like I do).

The Whatmen...I mean the Watchmen. I'm sure it's a great comic and all but how did I end up in the group with the topic that I know nothing about. Oh well, at least this draw-off got me trying to draw again after almost a two year creative dry spell. Thanks ljamal for all your hard work on this draw off, hope my post doesn't sound too whiny, I really do appreciate all the work that must go into facilitating a draw-off of this size. Best of luck to all, I can't wait to see what everyone turns in on this round.
