I've only just started writing comics but I'm already learning to hate sound effects. I'm stuck for one right now. I need an old-fashioned air raid siren.

WEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

No? I don't know. All my sound effects seem so stupid to me. They always make me giggle and that's not really what I'm going for. I can't find an air raid siren in any the comics I own so I can't pinch it from anywhere. Anyone have any suggestions? And while we're at it does anybody have any tips on sound effects, any good ways to do them without making a fool of yourself?

Cheers - Martin.

Damn, I'm on the wrong computer and don't have all my bookmarks, but head on over to www.scrypticstudios.com and check the reference section for a couple of great SFX dictionaries/thesauruses...they're always good in a pinch, especially when starting out.

Me, I'd do something like

WeeerrroOOOOOoooonnn

But, I'd also make sure my letterer (usually me) shaped the sound to show the dopler effect to its best advantage.

Cool link. I'm looking on that site now. Lots of good stuff.
