PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING - AFTERNOON

JUDE (licking his lips nervously): No. That was a fire.

LAUREN: But you set it.

PANEL 2

Jude laughs as he drops the sack.

PANEL 3

Hitting the ground, Lea’s head, upper torso, and one arm fall out of the sack.

PANEL 4

A WHITE FLASH:

PANEL 5: INT. MATHIS’ APARTMENT – NIGHT

From Jude’s POV in B&W, fists fly, striking Lea in the stomach and head. She doubles over and covers herself as Jude continues to pummel her.

PANEL 6

She cries out as he lands another in her gut and folds. His feet lash, kicking her, kicking her against the suitcases spilling their contents, and then the wall.

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

Jude keeps the gun pointed at Lauren.

JUDE: No. I told you. They were killed in a fire.

LAUREN (suspicious): You killed them.

PANEL 2

Jude’s shaking hand reaches for his face and stops.

JUDE (cracking): Why... why do you keep saying I killed my parents?

PANEL 3

Jude’s eyes close, standing there. A faint image of fire plays over his eyelids.

JUDE: It was a fire… a god-damned fire!


PANEL 4

Lauren moves for her knife.


PANEL 5

Jude’s eyes snap open, burned in his retinas, a little boy igniting a wire to a kerosene lamp.

JUDE: THAT’S ALL!


PANEL 6

From Jude’s POV, Lauren regards the gun aimed down at her, crouched in the dirt, inches from her knife.

JUDE (O.F.) So what? You kill yours?

LAUREN: …suppose I did?

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

Jude backs away from Lauren, keeping his gun on her.

JUDE Then you’re a step farther gone than I am… you’re the one on the radio, aren’t you? (grin returns) The serial dumping bodies down California.

PANEL 2

Lauren stands, abandons her knife.

LAUREN: If I am, would I would leave you alive?

JUDE: Bullshit…

PANEL 3

Jude circles around Lauren for his car.

JUDE: You were going to steal my car and dump my body like you did with the others. **** you!

PANEL 4

Lauren’s eyes lock with his. Her tongue touches her lips.

LAUREN: Work with me.

PANEL 5

A crazed glaze in his eyes.

JUDE (barking a short laugh): Sorry. I’m not a killer like you. It’s actually damn lucky, now I think about it.

PANEL 6

Jude backs up to his car, training the gun on Lauren as she follow him.

JUDE: Don’t you ****ing think about it. Alive or dead, I don’t give a shit.

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

LAUREN: You don’t get it… Kill me now and get it over with.


PANEL 2

Jude crosses to the driver side, eyes locked on Lauren.

JUDE: I think you want to live just as much as I do.

PANEL 3

He opens the door and gets into the car. Lauren moves for the other door as he slams the driver door shut.

PANEL 4: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR - AFTERNOON

The gun aims out the passenger window as Lauren drops into view. The engine blazes.

PANEL 5

From Lauren’s POV, Jude aims at her, throwing the car into gear.

JUDE: Thank’s a mil, Lauren! I trust you don’t mind taking credit for another one!

PANEL 6: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

Lauren flips off the car backing away from it.

PANELS 1 – 3: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

From Lauren’s POV, the car tears out of the turnout, kicking up dust in its wake to continue through the mountain pass.

PANEL 4

Lauren’s feet walk to the knife discarded in the dirt.

PANELS 5 - 6

Kneeling, Lauren picks up her knife, presses against her lips closing her eyes.

Lauren’s eyes snap open. In them, a transparent Jude stares out with her.

LAUREN: You should’ve killed me before I fell for you.
