PANELS 1 – 3: EXT. VERADER HOUSE - MORNING

In B&W, a quick flash on the trailer home of Hank Verader with its paint peeling and lawn area that’s been neglected with trash dumped over the grounds. We pull out on a fast zoom to take in the trailer home, the grounds, and the field where it’s parked in the middle of nowhere.

PANEL 4

A WHITE FLASH:

PANEL 5: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

LAUREN: Seattle.

JUDE (nodding): Washington. Beautiful country up there.

LAUREN: I guess.

JUDE: Your folks up there?


PANEL 6

LAUREN (glancing back out the side window): Were.

PANEL 1: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

Startled, Jude glances at her.

JUDE: Were? Did they move?

PANELS 2 - 3

Lauren looks directly at Jude.

LAUREN: No. Dead.

JUDE (O.F.): Dead?

LAUREN (nodding, unemotional): They died a while ago.

JUDE (a pregnant pause): I’m sorry.

PANEL 4

Lauren watches Jude for a moment, then leans back in the passenger seat.

LAUREN: What about your folks? Are they alive?

PANELS 5 - 6

Jude glances out the driver side window for a moment before turning back to watch the road.

JUDE: No. There... (pause, licking his lips) There was a fire at the house about seven years ago. Died of smoke inhalation.

PANELS 1 – 3: EXT. MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY - AFTERNOON

They turn around a bend and drive into a small country town, through it.

PANEL 4: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR - AFTERNOON

Disgust swamps Lauren’s face, examining the town.

LAUREN: You have a girlfriend?

PANEL 5

JUDE (smiling): Yes.

LAUREN (O.F.) What does she think of you driving off to Nevada?

JUDE: She doesn’t.

PANEL 6

Lauren tears away from the window to look at him.

LAUREN: What? She doesn’t like it?

PANEL 1 – 2: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR - AFTERNOON

JUDE: As far as she’s concerned, it’s none of her damned business.

LAUREN (glancing back at Jude) Sounds like you guys don’t get along.

JUDE (glancing at her): We try.

PANEL 3

Through the windshield from Jude’s POV, we drive up the road and turn, approaching a forest road within the mountains.

PANEL 4

Bored, Lauren takes in the landscape from the side window—


PANELS 5 - 7

--where the car drives on while zooming back and panning out, revealing the mountain range covering the expanse.

PANEL 1 – INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

From Jude’s POV through the windshield, a clearing off the road approaches.


PANEL 2 – 4: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

He pulls the car into the clearing, turns, backs up the car and stops, killing the engine.


PANEL 5 – 6: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

Throwing the gear into park, Jude stares Lauren down as she looks out the window around the clearing.

JUDE: Stay put. I have to take care of something.

Lauren nods. Jude glances at her briefly reaching for the handle—

PANELS 1 – 4: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

--as Jude opens the driver door and gets out. He slams it and walks toward the back of the car.

PANELS 5 – 6: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

Lauren leans her head against the seat, turning slightly to look out into the forest and the country road. The car shakes with the sound of the TRUNK OPENING.

Lauren frowns and snaps her head back to the rear window briefly, her vision is blocked by the trunk. A small smile plays on her lips.

PANEL 7: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

The passenger side door opens. Lauren’s feet step out.

PANELS 1 – 3: INT. VERADER HOUSE - NIGHT

From Lauren’s POV, in B&W, she walks down a hallway to peer through a slightly cracked bedroom separator.


PANEL 4
Hank Verader lies asleep in bed.


PANELS 5 - 6
Stepping through, she walks over to the bed.


PANEL 7

A knife rises, clutched in a little girl’s hand—

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

--and held down at Lauren’s side, following after Jude ahead of her, who carries a sack over his left shoulder.


PANEL 2

Her feet crackle leaves—


PANELS 3 – 5

--for Jude to whirl, blurring around while pulling something from the front of his pants. A GUN snaps its barrel, Jude peering down the length at:


PANEL 6

Lauren, standing frozen with her blood-dried knife at her side.

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING – AFTERNOON

JUDE: Drop it.

PANEL 2

Lauren regards Jude with expressionless eyes and flickers her gaze at the knife.

PANEL 3
Jude cocks the gun.

PANEL 4 – 5

Lauren drops the knife into the dirt and takes Jude in, along with the sack on his back.

LAUREN: What’s in the sack?

JUDE (grinning): You were going to stick me in the back with that thing, weren’t you?

LAUREN: You’re not going to Nevada, are you?

PANEL 6

JUDE (O.F.) Oh. I’m going.

Lauren tenses and kneels slightly toward her knife.

PANEL 1: EXT. FOREST CLEARING - AFTERNOON

Jude follows her with the gun, indicating to her to straighten up.

LAUREN (eyes the sack): That your girlfriend?

JUDE (smiling): That’s none of your damned business.

PANEL 2

LAUREN (grinning): You killed her, didn’t you? What happened? Didn’t like you going to Nevada?

JUDE (side-stepping left): Oh, that’s cute. Not exactly.

PANEL 3

LAUREN (following him): Not your first time, is it?

JUDE (his smile fading a bit): It wasn’t supposed to happen… Good job with the door. Usually it squeaks.

LAUREN: You don’t think you’re going to walk on this, do you?

PANEL 4

Jude re-aims.

JUDE: I could just shoot you.

LAUREN (a cruel grin): No. You can’t.

She bends down toward the knife.

PANELS 5 – 6

A GUNSHOT strikes the dirt, spreading a dust cloud. Lauren regards him for a moment, poised, then slowly straightens up.

LAUREN: Did your folks really die in a fire, or did you kill them too?
