PANEL 1: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – MORNING

One relaxed Jude hangs an arm on his window side, driving.

JUDE: You might want to tell me if someone’s looking for you… just in case I get in trouble.


PANEL 2

Lauren plows through the burger.

LAUREN: You don’t have a damn thing to worry about. Just drive.


PANEL 3

Jude and Lauren regard each other. His mirror shades and her narrowed, sharp and penetrating glare.

JUDE: One of thoses. Shall I shut up and drive?


PANEL 4

Lauren turns her head toward the window.

LAUREN: Something like that, yeah.


PANELS 5 – 7: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR / EXT. FREEWAY – MORNING

Lauren rests her head against the window, looking out at the speeding world. Pulling back to let Jude’s car drive on against the approaching mid-day spun, arcing to follow the car from above—

--that matches Jude’s POV looking through the windshield at the mountains to the east loom in the distance.

Lauren’s eyes flutter watching the world pass by, looking out.

From Jude’s POV, he continues driving, switching highways.

PANEL 1 – 3: INT. MATHIS’ APARTMENT – NIGHT

In B&W, from Jude’s POV, Lea slams the refrigerator door open and looks inside. Slamming it, she whirls and shoves him.

LEA: Shut up!


PANEL 4

A white flash—


PANEL 5 – 7: EXT. FREEWAY / INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – DAY

--zooms from the freeway onto the driver’s side window, closing in on Jude’s features to streak past and land on Lauren, sleeping in the passenger seat.

From Jude’s POV, he glances at the sleeping girl, twitching in her sleep

A CU on Lauren’s quivering features, fast asleep.


PANEL 4 – 6: INT. VERADER HOUSE – MORNING

From a little girl’s POV, she stands up at Hank’s beckoning finger. He stands from the chair and unbelts his pants.

PANEL 1 – 3: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR - EARLY AFTERNOON
Lauren’s eyes snap open as she turns her head toward Jude. She blinks, yawns and stretches in the passenger seat.
LAUREN: How long was I out?


PANEL 4

Jude lounges in the driver’s seat, watching the road ahead.

JUDE: Don’t know. Maybe an hour and a half, two.


PANEL 5

Blinking, Lauren looks around then through the windshield ahead at:


PANEL 6: EXT. MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY PASS – AFTERNOON

The trees, foliage and overgrowth of a forest lines both sides, side-winding through the mountain pass in Lauren’s POV.

LAUREN (O.F.): Where are we going?

PANEL 1: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

Jude smirks, glancing at her.

JUDE: I thought you didn’t want to chat.
LAUREN: I changed my mind. Where are we going?
JUDE: …Nevada. I cut through a pass here.


PANEL 2

Lauren swallows, takes in the state of her stained, dirt-layered clothes.

LAUREN: Look. I’m sorry about what I said earlier. It pays not to talk too much, you know?


PANEL 3

JUDE (nodding): Yeah, I understand. Didn’t mean to pry. I’m just one of those guys that likes to know.

PANEL 4 – 6: INT. MATHIS’ APARTMENT – NIGHT

From Jude’s POV in B&W, Lea shoves Jude roughly off to the side and storms past him—


PANEL 7 – 8
--into the living room. Suitcases are packed on the floor. Lea bends to pick up the suitcases as Jude’s arms reach for her, grab her arm.

PANEL 1 – 2: INT. MATHIS APARTMENT – NIGHT
Lea jerks her arm away and angrily whips around on him.

LEA (yelling): Don’t you ****ing touch me! Don’t ever touch me again!
JUDE (O.F.): You’re not going anywhere!
LEA: **** off! It’s none of your god-damned business what I do anymore! It’s over, Jude! Get used to it and wherever the **** it is you go!


PANEL 3

A white flash—


PANEL 4: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

--matches the flashing smile from Jude (Lauren’s POV).

JUDE (smiling): Name’s Jude.

PANEL 5

Lauren studies him before turning her head to stare out the windshield.

LAUREN: Lauren… What’s in Nevada?

JUDE (O.F.) Family home.


PANEL 6

Jude winks at her.

JUDE: I grew up there.

PANEL 1: INT. JUDE’S CAR – AFTERNOON

Both Jude and Lauren watch the mountain highway unfold. She glances out the side window.

LAUREN: What brought you to California?

JUDE: What else? Job opportunity, new experience, good weather. Why does anyone else?

LAUREN (finally smiling slightly): So what happened? Didn’t work?

PANEL 2 – 3
Jude falls silent for a moment and concentrates on the road ahead. He swallows, his face unreadable.

PANEL 4: INT. VERADER HOUSE – MORNING

From Lauren’s POV in B&W, Harnk points at the floor in front of him. A dark, murderous look.


PANEL 5 – 7

From Lauren’s POV in B&W, she backs up as Hank advances and grabs her arm, shoving her. She falls, landing on her back staring at a wood paneled ceiling.

In B&W from Lauren’s POV, Hank suddenly appears above her.

One hand reaches for her mouth, the other shoves down his boxers.


PANEL 3 - 4

Lowering himself, he suddenly heaves. The girl’s arms flail.

LAUREN (O.F.) NO!

PANEL 1: INT. JUDE MATHIS’ CAR – AFTERNOON

--as Jude glances at Lauren.

JUDE: No. I do this trip every six months or so.


PANEL 2

Lauren takes in Jude’s reply, in thought.

JUDE (O.F.): Go out. Check on the condition of the house, the tenants, fix anything that needs fixing. Maintenance mostly.


PANEL 3

JUDE(glancing at her): What about you? Where are you from?

PANEL 4
Lauren’s eyes harden.
