Well here's a page from an issue of the series I'm currently inking... wish I had time to post more often lol.

The inks are brush and crowquill on bristol paper, and for this particular page I passed over inking white acrylic into the rain effect and just did it in Photoshop. For some odd reason my nibs dont like white ink too well and me using a ruler with a brush is.... messy. I'd love to figure out how to do that.

Thanks to GW for his advice on inking underwater scenes and other kinds of effects. Man, I learned a lot from you on that :) This issue had a rain scene, an extremely high speed motorcycle chase with bloody rockets on them, AND an underwater battle, not to mention glass distortion.

ANYWAYS, pencils by the awesome Nadir Balan :D

whatever :) - it is a taste of style - i prefer thicker lines :)...

Ooooh you meant the heavier outline ALL the way around the bike? With the angle it didn't make much sense because the front of the bike is closer to us :)

Because there's so much black in the panel it might have helped to thicken the whole outline of the bike a bit. You could still vary the weight back to front to pop out the front of the bike while creating some separation from the house in the b/g.

Rain: Try using a straight edge & an X-acto knife to scratch the straight lines. They'll be a tad jagged, which gives it that organic feel.

And thanks for the kind words Diana. Lot's of really cool folks helped me learn what I know, so I'm always glad to pay it forward.

Thanks again GW! Yeah, I figured out later that it would've matched the tires better too  AND I messed up the shadow on the lower part of panel 1. I didn;t know why there was highlights there, it should've been black >_<

Doesn't an x-acto ruin the page?

Great inks over great art

Just use the point of the blade on the paper, dull side against the straight edge. it basically gouges a shallow layer, which exposes the white under the inks. Try it on a piece of scrap 1st.

Thanks :D Hey my next ink needs a starry background.... can you recommend a masking tool and method of creating it? I've NEVER done star spatter before >_<

Mecha,
There are a couple of different ways to splatter stars.

My current method is to splatter liquid art gum, then cover with black.

Method 2, is to fill in the black first, mask areas that don't need white, splatter the white

Method 3 is to ink the black starfield first, splatter the white, gently sand the white off the rest of the panel, ink the rest of the panel.

I have used all of these methods over the years and the current one is the most efficient and least likely to cause damage to other areas.

Hope this helps
Larry

Liquid art gum?

Mecha,
It's a liquid frisket. Used primarily in watercolor. You apply it (Brush, pen, stick) wait for it to dry, then paint over it. After the paint is dry you erase or peel the gum away from the paper. Leaving the space beneath the original color.

Oh good! It comes off with an eraser then?

Yeah you can use your eraser to pull it off but, I always use my finger especially when I use it with watercoloring.

LoL Just be careful because some erasers leave that annoying white film on your black ink that makes the inks look faded which is why I sometimes just use my finger and most of the time once you remove some of it the rest just rolls up with what you've already remove kinda like a snowball effect rolling down a hill it just gets bigger and takes everything in it's path.

Yeah I use Photoshop to darken anything that's faded anyways :)
