Anyone reading this want to take a stab at drawing some Fist of Justice? Chad will be tied up on BloodRayne and some other top secret project, Cinar is away until the end of the year. Looking for someone with a great superhero style. Hit my PM box if you're into it.

ANDDDDD.... if you're going to be at the Pittsburgh show this weekend, be sure to bring some samples or a portfolio by booth S108 and I'll be sure to give it a once over. If possible, bring a couple photocopies of a couple pieces so I can fax them to Ed if need be.
Remember - we're looking for a style that would fit in during the 70s or very early 80s. If you can do a spot-on Sal Buscema style, you'll get my vote. :)

Any chance of actually getting the man himself to do something, anything with FOJ? A poster, or a pinup maybe? I'd love to see that.

Chad was never signed on to do more than #29, but Mike and I dug his stuff so much that we blackmailed him into working on #30 for us. #31 is already drawn and inked by Cinar. #32 may be an antho-type issue with several shorts to help flesh out the other characters in FOJ's universe.

Artistic -- cool art! But the Fist of Justice stuff leans more towards very old-school stylings. Think the energy of Kirby with Romita, Kane, Buscema finishes.
Carl -- we may have all the stories assigned now, but if not, I'll zap you to see some sequentials, bro!
Bishop/Paul -- last time I spoke to Rick, he was all about working on FoJ (I even have a sketch), I do know he's been banging away on some new Marvel and DC projects so it all boils down to him having an opening in his schedule. Joe is working on E-Man right now, but I'm hoping he can tackle something afterwards.

Hey Mike-
I suffered a pinch nerve in my lower back. Not to get into too much detail, i had shooting pain in both legs and couldntt sit for long periods of time.It was severe enough that i had some minor surgery done and was forced to lay in bed for what i felt was an eternity.
Its been rough but thats what happens when you hit 40. lol
Im feeling better now and can walk around without too much discomfort.
So there it is.
Back to work for me. Have to pay the doctors.

Whoa. That octopus dude is WILD! You have some very cool stuff going on with these pages. But, check this out, some things jump out at me and I hope you don't mind me pointing them out. It's like you're using 3 different styles so the FOJ character changes from panel to panel.
For example, panel one; his body structure doesn't match the rest of the story, whereas everywhere else he has scrawny legs. Chad started drawing him like this with DWP29 and I attacked and made him change them all. :)
Third panel on both pages with the close-up shots, I think your style changes here, you're over-rendering the faces and making him look much older than he needs to be. Most superheroes look young and heroic so the FOJ is no exception because he's the most handsomest of them all! ;)
Page two, panel one; FOJ's pose needs to have more power to it, like he's really pounding Octodude. Right now it looks like a little tap.
But like I said, all the shots of Octodude, rock! He's a bad-ass looking villain! I think if you stick with less renders for the most part (like most of the panels), then you really got your style down. I'd try experimenting with movign the camera angles around some, superhero comics of the past had crazy angles.
Thanks for posting these, dude and I can't wait to see if you decide to do more!

Hey, Boss eDuke,
I was wondering if that FoJ gig is still needing to be filled. If it hasn't been, I have a buddy who has a LOT of potential and talent that I'd like to send your way. I'm not 100% sure he'll be able to do it, but I also don't want to mention it to him if it's already been filled.
I think a gig like FoJ would be good for him, and I honestly think you'll like his work.
If it HAS been filled, then GREAT! That's one less issue for you folks to deal with. Either way, I hope it all works out for you guys ASAP and in the best way possible.
Hmmm. I'm starting to notice that I'm nicer to people when I'm tired. That's odd.

That's a bad ass sequential page right there.
I see what the other guys are talking about though. Your style has some inconsistencies. Particularly how you're rendering (I like the simplistic style myself with more edges than curves--but not exactly the look the FOJ guys are looking for I'm sure). Still I think you got a lot going for you in how you layout a page--keep doing your thing you're only going to get better...and if this doesn't pan out for you, I'd be down to collab sometime.

Remember, folks - we're really looking for a 70s or early 80s look to draw Fist. While I really dig that Manga inspired rendition, it's not what we're looking for in terms of the regular feature. Although something like that might be good for a short backup or something!
I guess what I'm saying is - the more classic style, the better. But that doesn't mean if you can't/don't draw that way you shouldn't throw something in here. You never know what kind of stuff we'll doing in the future.

Hey, we came pretty close to retro pricing on #28. We lost $0.28 per each issue sold through the Diamond distribution system. That's retro pricing (in the negatives!!) Haw!
I just hope #30 sells around the same as #29 so I'll only have like a $1,500.00 financial loss in printing the book.

Marvel Essentials Ehhh.
When the Essentials first came out... I wasn't diggin' on 'em. B/W just didn't work for me. But lately, I just feel like being able to read some of this old stuff anywhere (on the can, on the hammock, at the dinner table, etc) so it doesn't matter how beat these things get. If I could get beat-up originals at superlow prices, I'd be there! :har:

How could you leave out John Byrne's run?
Because I don't care for Byrne's style enough to put him in my top 5?

Blasphemer!!.;) His style now does suck but not when he was drawing Spidey in the 80's before he got the X-men Gig. Oh well how about Gil Kane's run? Just look at this cover.

Yes to Kane. BUt still, not my top 5. Purely subjective, obviously. Hell, some people will put McFarlane in the top slot, others somebody like... I dunno, Mark Bagley. Dif'rent strokes and all that.

Great list. I love Ross Andru's work on Spiderman. I might replace Buscema and Frenz with JR, jr. and McFarlane. However, they're all great.
I agree with leaving Byrne out. Spiderman isn't his character. He owns FF and Superman to me. His Xmen work was outstanding, but he really hit his stride with Fantastic Four.

John Romita Sr is my absolute fave Spidey artist of all time. I met him at a con once, lovely, friendly guy. A true pro :)

thanks guys! i enjoyed drawing the character.
i have to admit most of my fav artist are quite contemporary. but i do like the romita spidey. i remembered the issue that got me hooked. it was the chameleon disguised as capatin stacey and he stole some famous art from the gallery. i was young then, so i didn't know who the artist was or wasn't interested in who drew it or couldn't read. one or the other. lol. but i sure damn loved the art. i do believe it was romita snr. can someone check? maybe it was byrne. heh. i should be whipped for my sub par comic art history.
and i have to get my hands eventually on the essentials. i've been meaning to but like ed, i didn't like the bw. but just to get a whole classic read again would be fantastic. there goes more dough. :( lol.

The Kane/Romita collabs were awesome! I liked those much more than the Romita/Mooney collabs.
My favs; Romita Sr, Kane, Ditko, Byrne, Romita Jr.

Oh, man! I totally forgot about Leonardi! Leonardi rocks. First time I ever saw his work was an original piece he had in high school -- it was this Samurai thing, incredible!

nice work there pro...but...your style has a 2006 green lantern look (face) rather then the old school square jaw bone look...my take..both work well.

I agree with Wisper - make him older looking and with a good, strong jaw and this would be darn near perfect.
As it is, it looks like a 'Teen Titans' Fist of Justice. :)

Fist of Justice is one of the best things to happen to comics in years! I'm an old school, silver/bronze-age superfan, thanks guys for making comics fun. Here is my tribute to the big guy!

Still looking for an artist?
Here are the only two samples I have online, one pencil and one inked:
http://home.comcast.net/~joiesimmons/Supes_p1.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~joiesimmons/Supes_p2.jpg
And NO, I don't usually do funny shaped panels. In fact, I'm not sure i like 'em. I thought they would be cool for this fun sample.
Thanks!
